1 INTRODUCCIÓN!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!El!Instituto!de!Astronomía!(IA)!!genera!conocimientos!en!todos!los!campos!de!astrofísica;!forma!
recursos! humanos! de! calidad! en! los! niveles! de! licenciatura,! maestría! y! doctorado,! e! incorpora! a! los!
estudiantes!en!proyectos!de!investigación;!realiza!la!difusión!y!divulgación!de!temas!astronómicos!y!de!
la!ciencia!en!general,!a!la!vez!que!opera,!desarrolla!y!mantiene!en!óptimas!condiciones!el!Observatorio!
Astronómico!Nacional!de!San!Pedro!Mártir!en!Baja!California!(OANJSPM)!y!el!Observatorio!Astronómico!
Nacional!de!Tonantzintla!en!Puebla!(OANJT).!!
Conforme! al! Plan! de!Desarrollo! del! IA,! en! 2013! prosiguió! con! acciones! para! fomentar! la! vida!
académica,! impulsar! la!docencia!y!formación!de!personal,!modernizar! la! infraestructura!observacional,!
apoyar!el!desarrollo!de!la!infraestructura!computacional,!buscar!una!mayor!vinculación!con!el!exterior,!y!
promover!la!difusión!y!divulgación!de!la!astronomía!para!acercarla!a!un!mayor!número!de!personas.!
Destacan! las! investigaciones! sobre! el! descubrimiento! de! nuevos! agujeros! negros! duales! en!
núcleos!activos!de!galaxias;!un!modelo!tridimensional!detallado!de!la!Nebulosa!del!Anillo,!una!nebulosa!
planetaria!que!permite!vislumbrar!cómo!será!la!evolución!y!ocaso!de!nuestro!Sol;!el!estudio!de!teorías!
de!gravitación;!el!inicio!de!las!obras!para!la!instalación!en!el!Observatorio!Astronómico!Nacional!en!San!
Pedro! Mártir! de! los! tres! telescopios! robóticos! del! proyecto! TAOSJ2! (TransJNeptunian! Automated!
Occultation!Survey),!dedicado!a!obtener! información!acerca!del!origen!de! los! sistemas!planetarios!en!
colaboración!con!el! Instituto!de!Astronomía!y!Astrofísica!de! la!Academia!Sínica!(ASIAA)!de!Taiwán!y!el!
Observatorio! Astrofísico! Smithsoniano! (SAO)! de! la! Universidad! de! Harvard;! el! inicio! de! operaciones!
científicas! del! High! Altitude! Water! Cerenkov! Observatory! en! Sierra! Negra,! Pue.,! y! el! primer! año! de!
operaciones! científicas! del! instrumento! RATIR! (ReJIonization! and! Transients! InfraRed! camera)! en! el!
telescopio!Harold!L.!Johnson!de!1.5m!del!OANJSPM.!!
El! IA! continuó! con! programas! para! fortalecer! la! calidad! de! los! estudios! de! posgrado! en!
Astrofísica.!En!vinculación,!por!primera!vez,!suscribió!un!convenio!de!transferencia!de!tecnología!con!la!
empresa!Harlingten!Center!for!Innovative!Optics,!Inc.!para!poner!en!marcha!un!prototipo!comercial!de!
la! tecnología!del! “SISTEMA!HYDRA”!para!el!pulido!de! superficies!para!óptica!astronómica.! El! Instituto!
también! realizó! labores! de! difusión! y! divulgación! de! la! ciencia,! entre! las! que! destacan:! la! exposición!
fotográfica!“Transborda!al!universo!en!el!Metro”!para!el!Sistema!de!Transporte!Colectivo!en!la!Cd.,!de!
México,! la! creación! del! taller! dirigido! principalmente! al! sector! infantil! “Pequeños! Cosmonautas”,!
realizado!en!el! IA!y!que!continuará! sus!actividades!apoyado!por!el!CONACYT,! y! la! realización!de! la!5ª!
Noche!de!las!Estrellas!2013,!con!el!tema!El!Universo!y!el!Agua”,!en!Ciudad!Universitaria!y!en!Ensenada,!

en!el!Observatorio!Astronómico!Nacional!en!San!Pedro!Mártir,!B.!C.!112!personas!y!en!el!Observatorio!
Astronómico!Nacional!de!Tonantzintla,!Pue.,!seis!personas.!De!acuerdo!a!la!reglamentación!establecida!
el! IA,! realizó! un! reconocimiento! a! su! personal! por! los! años! de! servicios! prestados! a! la! Universidad.!

2.1 PERSONAL!ACADÉMICO!
La! planta! académica! en! 2013! estuvo! integrada! por! 132! miembros:! 74! investigadores! y! 58!
técnicos! académicos.! Los! investigadores! estuvieron! constituidos! por! tres! eméritos,! 65! titulares! y! seis!
asociados;! los!técnicos!académicos!por!38!titulares!y!20!asociados.!Se!contó!con!la!colaboración!de!19!
becarios! posdoctorales! apoyados! por! la! UNAM! y! por! otras! instituciones.! La! distribución! del! personal!
académico!en!las!sedes!que!integran!el!Instituto,!fue!de!74!miembros!en!Ciudad!Universitaria,!57!en!el!
Observatorio! Astronómico! Nacional! en! San! Pedro! Mártir! y! uno! en! el! Observatorio! Astronómico! en!
Tonantzintla.! En! 2013! se! aprobaron! 30! recontrataciones,! tres! definitividades,! dos! promociones! y! se!
incorporaron!dos!nuevos!miembros!a! la!entidad.!El!personal!del! IA!participó!casi!en!su!totalidad!en!el!
programa!de!Primas!al!Desempeño!del!Personal!Académico!de!Tiempo!Completo! (PRIDE),!más!del!80!
por! ciento! ubicado! en! los! niveles! C! y! D! de! este! estímulo.! Pertenecieron! al! Sistema! Nacional! de!
Investigadores!(SNI)!76!académicos,!70!investigadores!y!seis!técnicos,!de!los!cuales!el!80!por!ciento!se!
encuentra!en!los!niveles!I!y!II.!
3 PRESUPUESTO!!
El! presupuesto! autorizado! al! Instituto! ascendió! a! 231.5! millones! de! pesos,! de! los! cuales! se!
asignaron! 122.4! millones! de! pesos! al! IA! en! Ciudad! Universitaria,! 106.6! millones! al! Observatorio!
Astronómico!Nacional!de!San!Pedro!Mártir,!y!2.5!millones!de!pesos!para!el!Observatorio!Astronómico!
Nacional!de!Tonantzintla.!Del!total!de!esos!recursos,!se!destina!al!gasto!de!operación!una!participación!
aproximada!del!13!por!ciento,!y!de!ese!gasto!el!cincuenta!por!ciento!está!etiquetado!y!el!equivalente!al!
7!por!ciento!del!total!está!disponible!para!el!apoyo!de!actividades!académicas!individuales!y!colectivas!
que!desarrolla!el!Instituto.!!
4 FUNCIONAMIENTO!INTERNO!Y!COMISIONES!
El!Consejo!Interno!del!IA!realizó!29!sesiones!en!la!que!se!trataron!diversos!asuntos!académicos!e!
impulsó!el!trabajo!de!órganos!colegiados!y!comisiones!en!las!que!!se!analiza!y!regula!diversos!aspectos!
específicos! de! la! vida! académica! del! Instituto:! la! Comisión( de( Asignación( de( Tiempo( de( ( ( Telescopio,(
(CATT)( ! realizó!oportunamente! las!convocatorias!respectivas!para! la!calendarización!de! los!tiempos!de!
observación! en! los! telescopios! con! los! que! cuenta! el! Instituto,! realizó! elecciones! para! dos! nuevos!
integrantes;! la! Comisión( de( Asignación( de( tiempo( de( Telescopio( México9( Gran( Telescopio( Canarias,(
(CATT9MEXICO(GTC)( (el! IA! intervino!en! la!asignación!del!tiempo!global! !de!observación! !para!México!y!
realizó!un!análisis!del!aprovechamiento;! la(Comisión(Asesora(de(Proyectos(de(Instrumentación((CAPPI),!!
realizó!análisis!y! !evaluación! !de!25!proyectos! !y! las!presentó!al! !Consejo! Interno.!La!Comisión(para( la(
Preservación(del(Archivo(Histórico!del! Instituto(de(Astronomía,! integró!el!archivo!documental!histórico!
“Fondo! Arcadio! Poveda”;! el! Comité( Académico( para( el( desarrollo,( uso( y( aprovechamiento( del(
supercómputo( del( IA! (CADAC)! realizó! el! análisis! sobre! la! coordinación! y! operación! para! el! servicio! al!
cluster!Atocatl;!la!Comisión(de(Cómputo,(CU,!realizó!propuestas!para!mejorar!servicios;!la!Comisión(para(
el(Cuidado(de(los(Espacios(Comunes((COCUESCO)(propuso!que!se!identificaran!instalaciones!y!espacios;!
el! !Comité! !Editorial!de! las!Publicaciones!Técnicas,!definió! lineamientos!para! las!publicaciones!y!revisó!!
las!publicaciones! !de!este! tipo!que! realizó!el! IA! y! ! en! ! la! !Comisión( Local(de( Seguridad,(se!efectuaron!
diversas!recomendaciones!!para!!la!seguridad!y!protección!de!la!comunidad!del!IA.!
5 INVESTIGACIÓN!Y!SUS!RESULTADOS!
Los!resultados!científicos!se!publicaron!en!revistas!internacionales!con!arbitraje!a!través!de!160!
artículos! y! 103! artículos! en! memorias! de! congresos! nacionales! e! internacionales.! El! personal! de!
investigación! produjo! un! promedio! individual! de! 2.1! artículos! científicos! arbitrados! en! revistas! de!
circulación! internacional.! Se! desarrollaron! 84! proyectos! de! investigación,! de! los! cuales! 27! fueron!
financiados!por!organismos!externos,!56!con!recursos!de!la!Universidad!y!uno!con!recursos!mixtos.!Estos!abarcaron! principalmente! las! líneas! que! se! tienen! establecidas! como! disciplinas! de! reconocimiento!
nacional!e!internacional.!(Apéndice)II)!
En!instrumentación!y!desarrollo!tecnológico,!el!IA!es!líder!en!el!proyecto!FRIDA!(inFRared!Imager!
and!Dissector!for!Adaptive!optics)!en!colaboración!con!otras!instituciones!de!México,!Estados!Unidos!de!
América!y!España!para!el!Gran!Telescopio!Canarias.!Este!proyecto!está!en! la! !etapa!de! fabricación!de!
componentes! mecánicos! y! ópticos.! Durante! el! año! se! realizaron! caracterizaciones! y! pruebas! de!
prototipos! para! la! optimización! de! los! diseños! y! su! implementación! en! manufactura,! se! realizaron!!
análisis!y!reportes!de!los!resultados!de!las!pruebas,!así!como!!la!actualización!de!toda!la!documentación!
del!proyecto.!
El!2013!marcó!el!primer!año!completo!de!operaciones!del!instrumento!RATIR!(ReJIonization!and!
Transients! InfraRed! camera),! cámara! ópticoJinfrarroja! de! nueva! generación! instalada! en! el! telescopio!
Harold!L.!Johnson!de!1.5m!del!OANJSPM,!convertido!a!operaciones!robóticas!para!tal!efecto.!El!proyecto!
clave! es! la! observación! y! seguimiento! de! las! contrapartes! ópticoJinfrarrojas! de! destellos! de! rayos!
gamma!detectados!por!los!satélites!SWIFT!y!FERMI.!Se!publicaron!más!de!70!circulares!internacionales!
sobre! dichos! eventos,! y! realizado! observaciones! para! múltiples! programas! de! observación! de!
académicos! del! Instituto! y! de! otras! instituciones! nacionales.! RATIR! es! una! colaboración! con! la!
Universidad!de!California,!Arizona!State!University!y!el!Goddard!Space!Flight!Center!de!NASA!en!los!EUA.!
En!diciembre!de!2013!las!partes!acordaron!renovar!el!convenio!de!uso!cooperativo!del!instrumento!por!
3!años!más,!hasta!2016.!!
El!proyecto!Observatorio! Internacional!de!Altas!Energías!HAWC!(High!Altitude!Water!Cerenkov!
observatory),!ubicado!en!el!volcán!Sierra!Negra!en!Puebla,!concluyó! la! tercera!etapa!con!100!tanques!
instalados,! inició! operaciones! científicas! y! actualmente! es! el! observatorio! de! altas! energías! más!
avanzado!del!mundo.!Permite!estudiar!los!objetos!astrofísicos!más!energéticos!del!Universo!y!el!origen!
de! los! rayos! cósmicos,! y! posiciona! así! a! nuestro! país! en! la! frontera! del! conocimiento! científico! y!
tecnológico.!La!etapa!de!construcción!continúa!y!estará!terminada!en!2014.!!
De! acuerdo! al! Plan! de! Desarrollo! del! IA! para! impulsar! la!Modernización! de! la! infraestructura!
Observacional,!en!el!cual!se!tiene!contemplado!que!el!Observatorio!de!San!Pedro!Mártir!se!transforme!
en!un!Laboratorio!de!Astrofísica!Internacional,!adicional!al!inicio!de!la!construcción!del!Proyecto!TAOS!II,!
continúan! ! los! proyectos! ! para! que! se! ! instalen,! entre! otros:! ! un! telescopio! de! 6.5m,! el! telescopio!
robótico!ópticoJNIR!de!1.2!m!en!colaboración!con!diversas!instituciones!francesas,!el!5º!telescopios!de!la!
red! internacional! BOOTES! encabezado! por! España,! ! y! ! el! Cerenkov! Telescope! Array! (CTA),! para! la!
observación!en!altas!energías!mediante!la!detección!de!radiación!Cerenkov!atmosférica.!!
En!2013!la!UNAM,!a!través!del!IA!firmó!un!convenio!de!colaboración!mediante!el!cual!participa!
como!socio!de!pleno!derecho!en!el!Sloan!Digital!Sky!Survey,!4ª!fase!(SDSSIV).!Este!proyecto,!que!usa!el!
telescopio!de!2.5m!en!el!Apache!Point!Observatory!de!los!EUA,!ha!realizado!en!sus!tres!primeras!fases!
grandes!catastros!astronómicos!que!han!revolucionado! la!manera!de!hacer! investigación!astronómica.!
En!esta!etapa,!de!2014!a!2020,!se!llevarán!a!cabo!tres!proyectos:!APOGEEJ2!(Apache!Point!Observatory!
Galactic! Evolution! ExperimentJ2),! MaNGA! (Mapping! Nearvy! galaxies! at! APO),! y! eBOSS! (extended!
Baryonic!Oscillation!Spectroscopic!Survey).!!
Con!más!de!100!solicitudes!recibidas!por!académicos!nacionales!y!de!otros!países!para!hacer!uso!
de!los!instrumentos!del!OAN,!se!utilizó!en!un!99%!el!tiempo!disponible!en!los!telescopios!en!San!Pedro!
Mártir,! y! en! 2013! fueron! publicados! 39! artículos! con! estricto! arbitraje! en! revistas! de! circulación!
internacional.!!
Asimismo,!a!4!años!de!haber!iniciado!operaciones,!y!principalmente!con!datos!tomados!con!OSIRIS,!un!
instrumento! en! el! que! el! IAJUNAM! tuvo! un! papel! importante! de! diseño! y! manufactura,! el! Gran!
Telescopio!Canarias!en!el!que!México!participa!al!5%!de!inversión,!publicó!40!artículos!de!investigación!
originales.!De!ellos!4!tienen!por!primer!autor!a!un!investigador!de!México,!y!de!estos,!2!trabajan!en!el!
Instituto!de!Astronomía.!!
6 VINCULACIÓN!CON!LA!SOCIEDAD,!COOPERACIÓN,!COLABORACIÓN!Y!
SERVICIOS!

6.1 VINCULACIÓN!
Las! actividades! más! destacadas! en! este! contexto! incluyen! un! convenio! de! transferencia! de!
tecnología! con! la! empresa! Harlingten! Center! for! Innovative! Optics,! Inc.! para! poner! en! marcha! un!
prototipo! comercial! de! la! tecnología! del! “SISTEMA!HYDRA”! para! el! pulido! de! superficies,! para! óptica!
astronómica.! La! tecnología! fue! desarrollada! por! este! Instituto,! y! es! un! sistema! que! permite! pulir!
superficies!de!distintos!materiales!con!formas!complejas!y!con!una!alta!calidad!óptica.!Está!conformado!
principalmente!por!una!herramienta!hidrodinámica!de!flujo!radial,!una!plataforma!de!control!numérico,!
un!sistema!de!control!e!inyección!hidroneumático,!metrología!óptica,!y!software.!
Mediante! un! convenio! con! Fundación! UNAM! y! el! donativo! del! Dr.! Luc! Binette,! Investigador!
Titular!del! Instituto,!se!dispuso!de! los!recursos!para!otorgar! la!beca!posdoctoral!Fundación!UNAMJLuc!
Binette.!Esta! fue!adjudicada!después!de!un!proceso!de!selección! internacional!al!doctor!Nissim!Fraija,!
quien! trabajará! por! tres! años! en! este! Instituto! a! partir! de! septiembre! 2013! en! temas! de! frontera! en!
astrofísica!de!altas!energías.!

otorga! Fundación! UNAM! a! los! nuevos! estudiantes! de! posgrado,! con! el! propósito! de! ayudar! a! los!
estudiantes!durante!los!primeros!meses!de!su!posgrado!mientras!se!tramita!la!beca!que!hayan!solicitado,!
a!otras!instituciones.!
11 DIVULGACIÓN!CIENTÍFICA!
El! IA!da!a! conocer!al!público!en!general!el! trabajo!académico!que! realiza!mediante!diferentes!
medios!de!comunicación!y!del!desarrollo!de!eventos!enfocados!a!acercar,!cada!vez!más,!a!la!población!al!
conocimiento!científico.!
Realizó!una!nueva!exposición!fotográfica!“Transborda!al!universo!en!el!Metro”!que!fue!exhibida!
en!diversas!estaciones!del! Sistema!de!Transporte!Colectivo!en! la!Cd.!De!México;! la! creación!del! taller!
dirigido!principalmente!al!sector!infantil!“Pequeños!Cosmonautas”,!realizado!en!el! IA!y!que!continuará!
sus! actividades! apoyado! por! el! CONACYT.! Instauró! el! archivo! documental! histórico! “Fondo! Arcadio!
Poveda”,!disponible!para!que!lo!pueda!consultar!todo!el!público.!Mantuvo!una!interacción!creciente!en!
las! redes!sociales,!Facebook,!Twitter!y!YouTube,!para!divulgar!el! trabajo!científico,!el! impacto!en!esos!
medios!es!de!4.5!millones!de!registros!en!el!periodo.!
Continuó!con!los!ciclos!de!conferencias!de!divulgación!dirigidos!al!público!en!general,!realizados!
el! primer! viernes! de! cada! mes,! tanto! en! las! instalaciones! del! Instituto! en! CU! como! en! Ensenada.!
Asimismo,! el! personal! académico! impartió!más! de! 190! conferencias! de! divulgación! en! diversos! foros!
nacionales! e! internacionales.! Atendió,! las! consultas! de! los! medios! de! comunicación! masiva! y! a! la!
sociedad! en! general,! sobre! diversos! fenómenos! astronómicos! como! eclipses,! cometas! y! lluvias! de!
estrellas,! proporcionó! asesorías! al! público! sobre! la! construcción! y! uso! de! telescopios! ! y! publicó! el!
Anuario!Astronómico!Nacional!2014.!
Entre!los!eventos!de!divulgación!realizados!en!2013!por!el!IA!se!mencionan:!el!Reto!México!2013,!
en!Ciudad!Universitaria!y!en!Ensenada,!B.C;!la!Noche!de!las!Estrellas,!con!el!lema!“El!Universo!y!el!!Agua”,!
que!incluyó!conferencias,!talleres!y!actividades!culturales,!además!de!observaciones!a!simple!vista!y!con!
telescopios,!correspondió!al!IA,!la!sede!en!la!explanada!de!Rectoría!en!Ciudad!Universitaria!y!en!Valle!de!
Guadalupe! en! Ensenada,! B.C.! Participó! dentro! del! Festival! de! la! Cultura!Maya,! celebrado! en!Mérida,!
Yucatán,! ! que! incluyó! una! serie! de! observaciones,! pláticas! y! conferencias.! En! las! instalaciones! de!
Ensenada,!Baja!California,!se!impartió!el!curso!XXII!Verano!del!Observatorio,!el!XIII!Taller!de!Ciencia!para!
Jóvenes!y!se!realizó!el!evento!Casa!Abierta.!Es!importante!resaltar!el!programa!de!visitas!guiadas!a!las!
instalaciones!del!Instituto,!por!medio!del!cual!se!atendió!a!más!de!6,!500!alumnos!de!diferentes!niveles!
educativos!y!al!público!en!general.!!
12 INFRAESTRUCTURA!
En! 2013! en! el! OANJSPM,! se! llevó! a! cabo! el! plan! de!mantenimiento,! para! operar! en! óptimas!
condiciones! la! infraestructura! básica,! instalaciones! eléctricas,! hidráulicas! y! de! telecomunicaciones.!
Continuó!el!programa!preventivo!de!protección!y!seguridad,!se!efectuó!una!auditoria!para!la!seguridad,!
se! instalaron! lámparas!de!emergencia!y!protección!a! instalaciones,! se! repusieron! los! transformadores!
que! fueron!dañados!por! las! tormentas!eléctricas.!También!se! rehabilitaron!y! remodelaron!cubículos!y!
otras! instalaciones.! Con! apoyo! de! la! Coordinación! de! la! Investigación! Científica,! se! adquirieron! dos!
nuevos!vehículos!para!el!transporte!de!personal.!
En! Ciudad! Universitaria! se! efectuó! la! rehabilitación! y! modernización! de! las! instalaciones!
eléctricas!de!uno!de!sus!edificios.!Se!concluyó!la!construcción!de!una!bodega!externa.!Se!llevaron!a!cabo!
protecciones! a! las! instalaciones! para! el! resguardo! de! bienes! y! se! instaló! una! reja! perimetral! de!
protección,!en!toda!el!área!junto!a!la!cúpula,!para!ser!utilizada!en!las!noches!de!observación.!Se!realizó!
la!remodelación!de!la!torre!de!óptica,!necesaria!para!el!desarrollo!de!la!instrumentación.!
En! el! Observatorio! Astronómico! Nacional! de! Tonantzintla,! se! realizó! un! levantamiento!
topográfico!especificando!las!líneas!de!instalaciones!hidráulicas,!eléctricas!y!de!telecomunicaciones.!Se!
llevaron!a!cabo!adecuaciones!a!las!instalaciones!hidráulicas,!se!amplió!y!mejoraron!las!instalaciones!de!
telecomunicaciones.!
