speed trains serve more than 150 cities in France. Rail Europe, the SNCF’s subsidiary and *
official representative in North America, offers a wide variety of economical railpasses like the
France Railpass, the Eurailpass, and the Europass; discounted passes such as the France
Youthpass (ages 12-25), France Seniorpass (age 60 and over), France Saverpass (for two or more
passengers), and France Rail ’n Drive Pass (combining rail and car travel), and discounts for
groups of six or more. Tickets are also available for TGV Mediterranee (Paris to
Avignon/Marseille), Eurostar (Paris/Lille to London), Thalys (Paris to
Brussels/Cologne/Amsterdam), Artesia (Paris/Lyon to Italy), and many other trains.
Passes must be purchased in advance, before leaving the United States and Canada.

Senior Citizens
Travelers age 60 and over can buy the Carte Senior, which allows 25% to 50% reductions on
first- or second-class domestic rail travel, depending on travel day, time, and advance booking.
Cards are for sale at railroad stations and at French travel agencies for 650 (one year). Even
without the Carte Senior, travelers age 60 and over are eligible for the Découverte Senior
discount—a 25% reduced fare on many TGV trains.
Proof of age is required. Please note that this card is not available in the United States.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION IN PARIS
The Métro
Simple and safe, the Paris Métro runs daily from 5:30 A.M. to 12:30 A.M. A single ticket costs
€1.40, a carnet of ten tickets, €10.50. Keep your ticket; you may be asked to show it to a transit
inspector and tickets are sometimes needed to exit.
Basic Paris Visite passes—good for unlimited travel on Metro, bus, and RER suburban train
lines—are available
for one (€8.35), two (€13.70), three (€18.25), and five (€26.65) days; Paris Visite passes going to
airports, Disneyland-Paris, and Versailles are €16.75, €26.65, €37.35, and €45.70. They also give
you reduced fares for some museums and bus tours. Passes for children ages 4-10 are half price,
and free for children under 4. Passes can be purchased at airports; the Paris Convention &
Visitors Bureau; Metro, RER, and railway stations; and in the United States (ask your travel
agent or tour operator).

Buses
Bus maps and information are available from the Paris Convention & Visitors Bureau. Bus fare is
€1.40; Metro tickets may be used.

MUSEUM PASSES
In Paris
The Carte Musées-Monuments pass gives you direct access (without waiting in line) to 60
museums and monuments in Paris and in the surrounding region. It is valid for one (€18), three
(€36), or five (€54) days and available at main Metro stations and at the Paris Convention &
Visitors Bureau, participating museums, and in FNAC stores.

FREE CONCERTS
Many churches and cathedrals in Paris and throughout France offer free concerts, especially
during the summer. In Paris, free organ concerts are given at Notre-Dame, St-Eustache, St. Merri,
and the Madeleine on Sundays. Check with local tourist offices for more information.
Every year, on June 21, the Fete de la Musique is a full day and night of free concerts everywhere
in France.

DISCOUNT THEATER TICKETS IN PARIS
In Paris, half-price theater tickets are sold on performance day at Kiosque Theatre ticket counters
at the Place de la Madeleine and on the Esplanade of the Tour Montparnasse (between the Tour
and the Gare Montparnasse). Credit cards are not accepted; a small commission is charged for
each ticket. Some theaters offer reduced-price tickets for students and standbys 15 minutes before
curtain
