Unidad 5. El Presente Continuo 
Clase 1 
Te doy la bienvenida a esta primera clase de la unidad 5, en donde comenzaremos a estudiar el 
Presente Continuo. Este tiempo verbal es el que usamos para describir acciones que están 
ocurriendo en este momento, es decir, en el momento en el que se está hablando. Su estructura 
es muy sencilla: se forma con el verbo “TO BE” seguido de un verbo de rutina al cuál le agregamos 
“ING” al final. Esta terminación es lo que en castellano denominamos el gerundio y en castellano 
se traduce como “-ando / -endo”. Veamos la fórmula de cómo se arma una oración afirmativa: 
AFFIRMATIVE FORM 
SUBJECT + VERB “TO BE” + VERB –“ING” + COMPLEMENT 
 (AM-IS-ARE) 
 Ejemplos: 
 I am cooking dinner at the moment. 
 ( Yo estoy cocinando la cena en este momento.) 
 
 She is playing hockey now. 
 ( Ella está jugando hockey ahora.) 
 
 They are having lunch with friends. 
 (Ellos están almorzando con amigos.)

Cómo formar el gerundio: 
 
La forma verbo + ing se llama gerundio o participio de presente. 
 
 Generalmente, se le agrega “ING” al final del verbos para formar el gerundio

watch watching mirando 
cook cooking cocinando 
read reading leyendo 
 
 
 
 Cuando el verbo termina en la vocal “E”, se la elimina, y luego se coloca “ING”

have having teniendo 
 
 
 
los verbos que terminan en doble "e" la mantienen antes de añadir el 
sufijo "ing". 


 Si el verbo termina en "-ie", el gerundio es "-ying" 
VERB GERUND MEANING 
lie lying mintiendo 
die dying muriendo 
tie tying atando 
 Si el verbo es monosilábico o de dos sílabas con acento en la última (esto quiere 
decir que al pronunciarla, la palabra se acentúa en la última sílaba) y las últimas tres 
letras del verbo son consonante, vocal y consonante (C+V+C), se repite/duplica la última 
consonante y se agrega “ING”.

Si la última consonante es “ w, r, x, y” NO SE DUPLICA la última 
consonante

Ejemplos: 
 
I am talking to my sister about the movie. (yo estoy hablando con mi Hermana sobre la película) 
She is dancing very well. (ella está bailando muy bien.) 
They are agreeing about the colour of the wall. (ellos están acordando el color de la pared) 
The dog is dying of pneumonia. (el perro está muriendo de neumonía) 
He is swimming in the marathon. (él está nadando en la maratón) 
The movie in beginning at this moment. (la película está comenzando en este momento) 
We are playing the drums. (nosotros estamos tocando la bacteria) 
My father is fixing the car. (mi papa está arreglando el auto)
