In this paper I outline three kinds of analysis of classical texts in the history of political philosophy, which I call “Reconstruction”, “Illustration” and “Use”. I briefly develop each of these methodologies, relying especially on my own work on John Locke and Thomas Hobbes. Finally, I put forward some thoughts about the value of the different kinds of approach.

Resumen En este trabajo me pregunto por la naturaleza de la investigación filosófica. Para este propósito contrasto dos perspectivas diferentes: una analítica, la otra histórica. Identifico una tensión entre estas perspectivas. Sin embargo, intento mostrar una vía de reconciliación entre ambas. Para clarificar el panorama, distingo dos propiedades de la investigación analítica: universalidad y necesidad conceptual, respectivamente. Además, contrasto la visión de Bernard Williams y la de Richard Rorty alrededor de la naturaleza de la investigación filosófica. Sostengo que el esquema de Rorty no incluye cosas relevantes de la filosofía y propongo un esquema conceptual que permita rescatar cuestiones como la universabilidad y la variabilidad de los conceptos, su inmutabilidad y cambio, etc. Palabras clave: investigación filosófica; análisis conceptual; historia de los conceptos; universalismo filosófico; necesidad conceptual.

La pregunta que confiere coherencia y finalidad a un análisis riguroso de la vida po-lítica como sistema de conducta es: ¿Cómo logran persistir los sistemas políticos en un mundo donde coexisten la estabilidad y el cambio? En definitiva, la búsqueda de la res-puesta revelará lo que podemos denominar los procesos vitales de los sistemas políticos-las funciones fundamentales sin las cuales ningún sistema político podría perdurar-junto con los modos corrientes de respuesta mediante los cuales los sistemas logran man-tenerlos. El análisis de estos procesos y de la naturaleza y condiciones de las respuestas constituye, a mi entender, el problema central de la teoría política. La vida política como sistema abierto y adaptable Aunque la conclusión que extraeremos de este trabajo es la conveniencia de inter-pretar la vida política como una serie compleja de procesos mediante los cuales ciertos tipos de inputs se convierten en el tipo de outputs que podemos denominar políticas autoritarias, decisiones y acciones ejecutivas, será útil comenzar por un enfoque algo más simple. Así, consideraremos que la vida política es un sistema de conducta incorporado a un ambiente a cuyas influencias está expuesto el sistema político mismo, que a su tur-no reacciona frente a ellas. Están implícitas en esta interpretación varias nociones cru-ciales, de las que debemos ser conscientes. En primer lugar, tomando lo anterior como punto de partida para el análisis teóri-co, se da por supuesto, sin mayor indagación, que las interacciones políticas de una so-1. Se reproduce en este volumen con autorización de los editores. En realidad, se trata de un resumen de mi libro Esquema para el análisis político, Amorrortu Editores, Buenos Aires, 1969, que apunta a una elaboración más detallada de las opiniones que pueden encontrarse en A Systems Analysis of Political Life. Si lo incluyo en este volumen no es solamente porque ofrece una visión sinóptica de la estructura analítica desarrollada en los dos libros mencionados, sino además porque expone una estrategia para llegar a una teoría general que es sustancialmente diferente de las presentadas en los demás ensayos.
