ParasitePics: un prototipo de repositorio de imágenes de Parasitología Animal para la enseñanza y aprendizaje de esta disciplina

Resumen. En este artículo se presenta el diseño de un prototipo de repositorio de imágenes para Parasitología Animal (ParasitePics), que permite a docentes e investigadores contar con un espacio para compartir casos y experiencias a partir de material ad-hoc, de manera tal de enriquecer procesos de aprendizaje y de formación en este área. Este desarrollo se enmarca en un proceso de investigación acerca de las posibilidades de almacenamiento, búsqueda y recuperación de imágenes microscópicas específicas para la disciplina, a partir de metadatos pertinentes. Así, se ha realizado un trabajo conjunto con expertos y profesionales afines, de manera tal de definir un esquema de metadatos, incorporado luego en el prototipo propuesto. El esquema se basa en estándares existentes, pero se aborda la especificidad requerida. Los parásitos son organismos que viven en otros organismos vivos o sobre ellos para obtener nutrientes sin brindar compensación a cambio. En las ciencias médicas y veterinarias, generalmente, se acepta como “parásito” solamente a eucariotas y metazoarios; es decir, protozoarios, helmintos y artrópodos. Algunos incluyen bacterias transmitidas por artrópodos, las rickettsias. La enseñanza de esta disciplina ha hecho hincapié en componentes taxonómicos de los organismos y ha descuidado aspectos del entendimiento de la relación huésped - parásito, la comprensión de interacciones ecológicas y ciclos silvestres, la coevolución en los nichos, que sustenta la posible selección de animales resistentes a los parásitos y los argumentos de genética de poblaciones, que permiten comprender la problemática del desarrollo de resistencia a los antiparasitarios. Feces of wild Lesser Rhea (Rhea pennata) were collected during reproductive season 2012/2013 in the protected area Peninsula Valdés (Patagonia, Argentina). Samples were examined by traditional coproparasitological methods for identification and quantification of eggs and cysts. The blood-feeder nematode Deletrocephalus dimidiatus (Strongyloidae) has been consistently identified by egg morphometry and is for the first time recorded in wild R. pennata. Also we found the nematode Heterakis dispar-like (Oxiuridae), the cestodes Monoecocestus rheiphilus and Moniezia sp.-like (Anoplocephalidae) recorded for the first time in Patagonia, and the already registered protozoans Eimeira sp. (Eimeriidae) and Balantidium coli sp. (Cilliophora). Deletrocephalus dimidiatus parasite load and frequencies suggest it is a very common parasite during reproductive period en NE Patagonia, with a 70,8% of frequency in the adult/sub adult samples and a 20,8% in chick samples.
