El Programa Sea Grant de la Universidad de Puerto 
Rico (PSGUPR) ti ene como misión promover 
la conservación y el uso sustentable de los 
recursos marinos y costeros del archipiélago 
puertorriqueño. Para cumplir con esta misión, el 
Programa se vale de tres componentes principales: 
investi gación, extensión y educación. A través de 
éstos, el Programa viabiliza la tarea de producir 
y comparti r información con: las agencias 
gubernamentales, el sector privado, la academia, 
las escuelas, las comunidades, las organizaciones 
no gubernamentales y el público en general. 
Peces de Puerto Rico forma parte de los esfuerzos 
educati vos del PSGUPR y de una amplia variedad 
de publicaciones producidas con el fi n de aumentar 
el conocimiento acerca de los recursos marinos 
y costeros y crear conciencia sobre: la fragilidad 
de estos recursos, la necesidad de uti lizarlos 
sustentablemente y los benfi cios que nos proveen. 
Este libro es una guía sencilla para la identi fi cación 
de los peces más comunes en las aguas de Puerto 
Rico y del Caribe. Las especies aquí incluidas están 
agrupadas bajo ocho categorías disti ntas, según su 
hábitat y su uso. Junto a cada pez, los y las lectores 
y lectoras pueden encontrar el nombre común de 
la especie—en español y en inglés—, el nombre 
cientí fi co, su tamaño y su valor alimentario. Esta 
quinta edición de Peces de Puerto Rico incluye los 
peces con sus respecti vos colores, aspecto que 
le añade valor al libro, no sólo por su atracti vo 
sino también por la similitud que guardan las 
ilustraciones con el aspecto real de las especies 
presentadas. 
Entendemos que esta publicación posee gran 
uti lidad para: estudiantes, educadores, usuarios 
y manejadores de los recursos y afi cionados de la 
vida acuáti ca en general. Esperamos que la misma 
sea del agrado de todo el público.
The University of Puerto Rico Sea Grant College 
Program (UPRSGCP) is an educati onal enti ty dedicated 
to the conservati on and the sustainable use of marine 
and coastal resources. UPRSGCP has three main 
components: research, marine extension, and educati on. 
Each component contributes to the fulfi llment of the 
Program’s mission. Through these components, the 
Program produces informati on about coastal and marine 
resources and shares it with: governmental agencies, 
the private sector, universiti es, schools, communiti es, 
and non-governmental organizati ons, among other 
stakeholders. 
Fishes of Puerto Rico forms part of a wide variety of 
publicati ons produced by the UPRSGCP. This book is, also, 
part of the Program’s educati onal eff orts. UPRSGCP wants 
to increase the people’s knowledge about marine and 
coastal resources and create awareness of the fragility of 
those resources, the need of using them in a sustainable 
way, and the benefi ts that coastal and marine resources 
provide to us.
Fishes of Puerto Rico is a simple guide for the 
identi fi cati on of the most common fi shes found in the 
waters of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. The species 
presented in this publicati on are classifi ed in eight 
disti nct categories, according to their habitat and use. 
Next to each fi sh, the readers will fi nd the species 
common name—in Spanish and in English—the scienti fi c 
name, their size, and nutriti onal value. This fi ft h editi on 
of Fishes of Puerto Rico includes the fi shes with their 
respecti ve coloring, a feature that adds value to the book, 
not just for its visual appeal, but also for the similarity 
that these illustrati ons hold with the real physical aspect 
of the species that are presented.
It is our understanding that this publicati on is of great use 
for: students, educators, researchers, managers and users 
of the resources, and fans of aquati c life in general. We 
hope that this book will be enjoyed by our readers.
