What is the composition of living beings? 98% of living beings are composed of elements such as C, H, O, N, P and S. The remaining 2% is represented by elements such as Fe, Ca, Na, K, Cu, Mg, I, Cl, etc. Compounds in which carbon is involved in their composition are called organic compounds. Organic compounds include monosaccharides, polysaccharides, amino acids, proteins, lipids, nucleotides, and nucleic acids. Water represents approximately 70% of the chemical composition of living beings. Atoms are the smallest particles of matter that can exist and participate in chemical reactions. An atom is composed of a central region formed by protons and neutrons, and electrons that orbit around the nucleus. The electrons in the outermost energy levels determine the ability to react chemically. The number of protons in an atom is called atomic number (Z). Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons are called isotopes.
