The technique involves preparing the chosen area with a sterile technique, anesthetizing the puncture site with lidocaine, and introducing a 15-18 gauge IO needle perpendicular to the skin, advancing until reaching the periosteum, and then drilling through the cortex until resistance decreases, indicating that the needle has reached the marrow.
