What are the secondary reactions produced by antihypertensive drugs with manifestation in the oral cavity?
Hypotension and bradycardia can be caused by the interaction between non-cardioselective beta-blockers and adrenergic vasoconstrictors. The use of calcium channel blockers, such as nifedipine, can cause gingival enlargement in some patients. The lack of saliva increases the risk of new and recurrent carious lesions, including root caries. Lichenoid reactions can be caused by anti-hypertensive drugs such as thiazides or central alpha-agonists such as methyldopa.
