What are lipids?
Lipids are organic biomolecules formed mainly by carbon and hydrogen, and generally also oxygen, but in much lower percentages. They can also contain phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur. They are soluble in water and organic solvents. Their basic characteristic is hydrophobicity, which derives from their chemical structure. Lipids are not important for energy storage or structural components of biological membranes. Lipids are only found in animal cells.
