Matemáticas III Clase 14 Profesor:Humberto Cipriano Zamorano Agenda Objetivos de la clase Segundas derivadas parciales de funciones de varias variables a valores reales Matriz de Hesse de una función de varias variables a valores reales Objetivos de la clase 1. Conocer las derivadas parciales de segundo orden de una función de varias variables a valores reales. 2. Conocer la matriz de Hesse de una función de varias variables a valores reales. Ejemplo de motivación Considere la función f : R2++ → R tal que f (x , y) = xy . • Sabemos que ∂f (x , y) ∂x = yxy−1, ∂f (x , y) ∂y = ln(x)xy . • Volviendo a derivar las expresiones roja y azul con respecto a “x” e “y” se obtiene lo siguiente: (1) : ∂ ROJO ∂x = y · (y − 1)xy−2, (2) : ∂ ROJO ∂y = xy−1 + y · ln(x) xy−1, (3) : ∂ AZUL ∂x = 1 x · xy︸ ︷︷ ︸ xy−1 + ln(x) · yxy−1, (4) : ∂ AZUL ∂y = (ln(x))2 xy . En resumen: como ROJO = ∂f(x,y)∂x , los resultados en (1) y en (2) se escriben como (1) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂x ) ∂x = y ·(y−1)xy−2, (2) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂x ) ∂y = xy−1+y · ( ln(x) xy−1 ) , mientras que AZUL = ∂f(x,y)∂y , ocurre que (3) y (4) se escriben como (3) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂y ) ∂x = xy−1+ln(x)·yxy−1, (4) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂y ) ∂y = (ln(x))2 xy . • Las expresiones (1) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂x ) ∂x , (2) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂x ) ∂y , (3) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂y ) ∂x , (4) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂y ) ∂y , se llaman segundas derivadas parciales de la función f (x , y). Notación de segundas derivadas parciales En vez de escribir (1) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂x ) ∂x , (2) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂x ) ∂y , (3) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂y ) ∂x , (4) : ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂y ) ∂y , uno escribe (1) : ∂2f (x , y) ∂x∂x = ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂x ) ∂x , (2) : ∂2f (x , y) ∂y∂x = ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂x ) ∂y , (3) : ∂2f (x , y) ∂x∂y = ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂y ) ∂x , (4) : ∂2f (x , y) ∂y∂y = ∂ ( ∂f (x,y) ∂y ) ∂y . Dada f : Rk → R, la derivada parcial de segundo orden respec- to de las variables xi y xj (es decir, variables “i” y “j”), en esa secuencia, es dada por ∂2f (x1, x2, . . . , xk) ∂xi∂xj = ∂ ( ∂f (x1,x2,...,xk ) ∂xj ) ∂xi . • NOTA 1. Si queremos encontrar ∂ 2f (x1,x2,...,xk ) ∂xi∂xj , primero se deriva con respecto a la variable de la derecha en el “denominador”, la variable xj , y luego, ese resultado, se deriva con respecto a la variable que está a la izquierda en el “denominador”, la variable xi . • NOTA 2. En otros textos se usa la siguiente notación (segunda derivada parcial respecto de la misma variable): ∂2f (x) ∂x2i = ∂2f (x) ∂xi∂xi . Preferimos mantener la notación a la derecha, pues evita confusiones. Ejemplo 1 Por lo visto previamente: si f (x , y) = xy se tiene que ∂f (x , y) ∂x = yxy−1, ∂f (x , y) ∂y = ln(x)xy , por lo que (1) : ∂2f (x , y) ∂x∂x = y ·(y−1)xy−2, (2) : ∂ 2f (x , y) ∂y∂x = xy−1+y · ( ln(x) xy−1 ) , (3) : ∂2f (x , y) ∂y∂x = xy−1 + ln(x) · yxy−1, (4) : ∂ 2f (x , y) ∂y∂y = (ln(x))2 xy . Ejemplo 2 Dada g(x1, x2) = x 2 1 + x1x2 − x1ex2 , se tiene que ∂g(x1, x2) ∂x1 = 2x1 + x2 − ex2 , ∂g(x1, x2) ∂x2 = x1 − x1ex2 , por lo que ∂2g(x1, x2) ∂x1∂x1 = 2, ∂2g(x1, x2) ∂x2∂x1 = 1− ex2 , mientras que ∂2g(x1, x2) ∂x1∂x2 = 1− ex2 , ∂ 2g(x1, x2) ∂x2∂x2 = −x1ex2 . • NOTA 1. Se insiste que para obtener ∂2g(x1, x2) ∂x2∂x1 , primero se obtiene la derivada de g(x1, x2) respecto de la variable más a la derecha en el “denominador” (variable “x1”) y, segundo, ese resultado se deriva con respecto a la variable de la izquierda (variable “x2”): ∂g(x1, x2) ∂x1 = 2x1 + x2 − ex2 ∂ ∂x2=⇒ ∂ 2g(x1, x2) ∂x2∂x1 = 1− ex2 . • NOTA 2. Para una función f : Rk → R hay “k” derivadas parciales de primer orden y “k2” derivadas parciales de segundo orden. Derivadas cruzadas son iguales En los ejemplos anteriores destaca un hecho notable: • Del Ejemplo 1: ∂2f (x , y) ∂y∂x = xy−1 +y · ln(x) xy−1 ∧ ∂ 2f (x , y) ∂x∂y = xy−1 + ln(x) ·yxy−1. • Del Ejemplo 2: ∂2g(x1, x2) ∂x2∂x1 = 1− ex2 ∧ ∂ 2g(x1, x2) ∂x1∂x2 = 1− ex2 . Teorema de Clairaut - Schwarz Si las derivadas parciales cruzadas existen y son continuas en su dominio, entonces coinciden: ∂2f (x1, x2, . . . , xk) ∂xi∂xj = ∂2f (x1, x2, . . . , xk) ∂xj∂xi . Ejemplo 3 Si F (K , L) = KαLβ , con α, β ∈ R parámetros, se tiene que ∂F (K , L) ∂K = αKα−1Lβ , ∂F (K , L) ∂L = β KαLβ−1, por lo que ∂2F (K , L) ∂K∂K = α (α− 1)Kα−2Lβ , ∂ 2F (K , L) ∂L∂K = αβ Kα−1Lβ−1, mientras que ∂2F (K , L) ∂K∂L = αβ Kα−1Lβ−1, ∂2F (K , L) ∂L∂L = β (β − 1)KαLβ−2. • Como era de esperar: ∂2F (K , L) ∂L∂K = ∂2F (K , L) ∂K∂L = αβ Kα−1Lβ−1. Ejemplo 4 Supongamos que f : R2 → R tal que f (x1, x2) = √ x21 + x 2 2 . • Se tiene que ∂f (x1, x2) ∂x1 = 2x1 2 √ x21 + x 2 2 = x1√ x21 + x 2 2 , ∂f (x1, x2) ∂x2 = x2√ x21 + x 2 2 . • Por lo tanto (regla del cociente): ∂2f (x1, x2) ∂x1∂x1 = √ x21 + x 2 2 · 1− x1 · x1√ x21+x 2 2 ( √ x21 + x 2 2 ) 2 = x21 + x 2 2 − x21√ x21 + x 2 2 · (x21 + x22 ) = x22 (x21 + x 2 2 ) 3/2 . • De manera análoga: ∂2f (x1, x2) ∂x2∂x2 = x21 (x21 + x 2 2 ) 3/2 . • Por último (regla del cociente, derivando con respecto a x2) ∂f (x1, x2) ∂x1 = x1√ x21 + x 2 2 ∂ ∂x2=⇒ ∂ 2f (x1, x2) ∂x2∂x1 = √ x21 + x 2 2 · 0− x1 · x2√ x21+x 2 2 ( √ x21 + x 2 2 ) 2 , es decir, ∂2f (x1, x2) ∂x2∂x1 = −x1 · x2 (x21 + x 2 2 ) 3/2 . Matriz de Hesse • Al desplegar, de manera ordenada, las segundas derivadas parciales en una matriz se obtiene la matriz de Hesse de una función. Para f : Rk → R, la matriz de Hesse de f evaluada en el vector x = (x1, x2, . . . , xk)t ∈ Rk se define como Hf (x) = ∂2f (x) ∂x1∂x1 ∂2f (x) ∂x1∂x2 · · · ∂ 2f (x) ∂x1∂xk ∂2f (x) ∂x2∂x1 ∂2f (x) ∂x2∂x2 · · · ∂ 2f (x) ∂x2∂xk ... ... · · · ... ∂2f (x) ∂xk∂x1 ∂2f (x) ∂xk∂x2 · · · ∂ 2f (x) ∂xk∂xk ∈ Rk×k . • Note ahora lo siguiente: El hecho que, en general y para nuestros propósitos, las derivadas cruzadas coinciden, implica que la matriz de Hesse es simétrica. Ejemplo 5 Para f (x , y) = 2x2 − xy + ln(x + 2y), se tiene que ∂f (x , y) ∂x = 4x − y + 1 x + 2y , ∂f (x , y) ∂y = −x + 2 x + 2y , por lo que ∂2f (x , y) ∂x∂x = 4− 1 (x + 2y)2 , ∂2f (x , y) ∂y∂x = −1− 2 (x + 2y)2 , ∂2f (x , y) ∂y∂y = −4 (x + 2y)2 , es decir (ordenar los términos): ∂2f (x , y) ∂x∂x = 4(x + 2y)2 − 1 (x + 2y)2 , ∂2f (x , y) ∂y∂x = −(x + 2y)2 − 2 (x + 2y)2 , ∂2f (x , y) ∂y∂y = −4 (x + 2y)2 . • Con todo lo anterior, se tiene que Hf (x , y) = ∂2f (x,y) ∂x∂x ∂2f (x,y) ∂x∂y ∂2f (x,y) ∂y∂x ∂2f (x,y) ∂y∂y = 4(x+2y)2−1 (x+2y)2 −(x+2y)2−2 (x+2y)2 −(x+2y)2−2 (x+2y)2 −4 (x+2y)2 ∈ R2×2, es decir, Hf (x , y) = 1 (x + 2y)2 4(x + 2y)2 − 1 −(x + 2y)2 − 2 −(x + 2y)2 − 2 −4 ∈ R2×2. • En lo anterior, a modo de ejemplo, evaluando en x = 1 e y = 0 se tiene que Hf (1, 0) = 3 −3 −3 −4 ∈ R2×2. Ejemplo 6 Encontrar Hg (K ,K ) cuando g(K , L) = K 2 + KL2. Para el caso: ∂g(K , L) ∂K = 2K + L2, ∂g(K , L) ∂L = 2KL, por lo que ∂2g(K , L) ∂K∂K = 2, ∂2g(K , L) ∂L∂K = 2L, ∂2g(K , L) ∂L∂L = 2K . • Con lo anterior: Hg (K , L) = 2 2L 2L 2K ∈ R2×2. • Luego, evaluando en K = K y L = K se tiene que Hg (K ,K ) = 2 2K 2K 2K ∈ R2×2. Ejemplo 7 Supongamos que (forma cuadrática): f (x , y) = ax2 + bxy + cy . • NOTA. Si la forma cuadrática es ax2 + bxy + cy2, los elementos de la diagonal de la matriz son “a” y “c”, y el elemento fuera de la diagonal es “ b2”: A = [ a b/2 b/2 c ] . • Se tiene entonces que ∂f (x , y) ∂x = 2ax + by , ∂f (x , y) ∂y = 2cy + bx , por lo que ∂2f (x , y) ∂x∂x = 2a, ∂2f (x , y) ∂x∂y = b, ∂2f (x , y) ∂y∂y = 2c . • De esta manera, Hf (x1, x2) = [ 2a b b 2c ] = 2 [ a b/2 b/2 c ] = 2A ∈ R2×2. • Por ejemplo: si f (x , y) = 3x2 + 8xy + y2, entonces f (x , y) es una forma cuadrática asociada a la matriz A = [ 3 4 4 1 ] . • Por lo anterior, es directo que Hf (x , y) = 2 [ 3 4 4 1 ] ︸ ︷︷ ︸ A . • Notamos que, en este caso, la matriz de Hesse no depende de la variables, es decir, es una matriz constante. NOTA.Lo anterior es “análogo” al hecho que (funciones reales) si f (x) = ax2, entonces f ′′(x) = 2a. Ejemplo 8 Suponga que f (x , y) = a11x 2 + a12xy + a22y 2 + b1x + b2y + c , es decir, f (x , y) es una forma cuadrática más un término lineal, b1x + b2y + c . • La matriz de la forma cuadrática es A = [ a11 a12/2 a12/2 a22 ] . • Se tiene entonces que ∂f (x , y) ∂x = 2a11x + a12y + b1, ∂f (x , y) ∂y = 2a22y + a12x + b2. • Ya que las segundas derivadas parciales del “término lineal” son cero, es directo que Hf (x , y) = [ 2a11 a12 a12 2a22 ] = 2 [ a11 a12/2 a12/2 a22 ] = 2A. NOTA. Este resultado en análogo al caso real cuando f (x) = ax2 + bx + c , de modo que f ′(x) = 2ax + b, por lo que f ′′(x) = 2a. Ejemplo 9 Dados α, β ∈ R y dada F (K , L) = Kα + Lβ se tiene que ∂F (K , L) ∂K = αKα−1, ∂F (K , L) ∂L = βLβ−1 ⇒ ∂2F (K , L) ∂K∂K = α (α− 1)Kα−2, ∂ 2F (K , L) ∂L∂L = β (β − 1) Lβ−2, ∂2F (K , L) ∂K∂L = ∂2F (K , L) ∂L∂K = 0, por lo que la matriz de Hesse de F (K , L) es una matriz diagonal: HF (K , L) = [ α (α− 1)Kα−2 0 0 β (β − 1) Lβ−2 ] ∈ R2×2. Ejemplo 10 Del Ejemplo 4 sabemos que si f (x1, x2) = √ x21 + x 2 2 , entonces ∂2f (x1, x2) ∂x1∂x1 = x22 (x21 + x 2 2 ) 3/2 , ∂2f (x1, x2) ∂x2∂x2 = x21 (x21 + x 2 2 ) 3/2 , y que ∂2f (x1, x2) ∂x2∂x1 = ∂2f (x1, x2) ∂x1∂x2 = −x1x2 (x21 + x 2 2 ) 3/2 . Por lo tanto: Hf (x1, x2) = 1 (x21 + x 2 2 ) 3/2 [ x22 −x1x2 −x1x2 x21 . ] . • Aśı, en particular, Hf (2, 1) = 1 (22 + 1)3/2 [ 1 −2 −2 4. ] = 1√ 125 [ 1 −2 −2 4. ] . • Note que, en general, la matriz de Hesse depende de las variables. Obviamente que evaluando en un vector dado (numérico) se obtiene una “matriz numérica”.
