STRATEGIES FOR TOEFL
LISTENING SECTION – PART 2
TYPES OF LISTENING EXERCISES
 LONG CONVERSATIONS between 2 people (usually between a student
and professor or university employee).
PRAGMATIC UNDERSTANDING
 Function
Q: Why does the professor mention how to use the library?
A: To give the student guidance.
Attitude
Q: What is the student’s attitude about the people he currently works
with?
A: He likes them.
(Listen carefully for tone and degrees of certainty.)
CONNECTING INFORMATION
 Inference
Q: What does the student imply about the reference books he has 
already looked at?
A: They do not list population by city.
Q: Why does the student do that?
A: To explain his difficulties and to ask for alternatives.
CHALLENGES
 Speakers rarely talk in a completely logical, uninterrupted flow.
 Attitude may be reflected in a parenthetical aside.
 Speakers may attempt to go back and correct errors.
STRATEGIES FOR TEST TAKING
 Anticipate 5 W questions and listen for details that will answer those questions.
 Listen carefully to the questions asked.
 Pay attention to why the conversation is started in the first place. What does speaker one hope to 
accomplish? It is almost always because a student is requesting information, advice or help.
