REVISION – Simple Present – THEORY
SIMPLE PRESENT is used to make reference to everyday activities, things that have to do with our routine. We can also talk about FREQUENCY, which has to do with HOW OFTEN we do something. We will deal with the ADVERBS OF FREQUENCY: ALLWAYS, USUALLY, SOMETIMES, OCCASIONALLY, NEVER. (They are ordered from the most frequent to the less frequent)
Let’s see the three possible forms of SIMPLE PRESENT: AFFIRMATIVE, NEGATIVE and QUESTION
The affirmative form:
SUBJECT + (ADV. OF FREQ.) + VERB + PREDICATE
Here we have to pay attention to the SUBJECT, because when there is 3RD PERSON SINGULAR (HE/SHE/IT) as SUBJECT, we have to add –S to the VERB, but there are some SPELLING RULES to do this.
Example: I always get up early
Matías occasionally goes to school by bus.
My sister never studies TV at night.
The negative form:
When using the negative form, we need to add the AUXILIARY DO (DOES for 3RD P. Singular) followed by the negation NOT between the SUBJECT and the VERB.
BE CAREFUL, WE NEVER ADD –S TO THE VERB!! (Because we already added it to the auxiliary)
SUBJECT + DO NOT (DON’T) + VERB + PREDICATE
 DOES NOT (DOESN’T)
Example: Sol and I don’t have lunch at school
My cousin doesn’t have breakfast at home.
The question form:
When asking a question, we need to add the AUXILIARY DO (DOES for 3RD P. Singular) BEFORE the SUBJECT, and then VERB + PREDICATE.
BE CAREFUL, WE NEVER ADD –S TO THE VERB!! (Because we already added it to the auxiliary)
DO / DOES + SUBJECT + VERB + PREDICATE ?
And every question needs an ANSWER. This is the proper way to formulate one:
YES, SUBJECT + DO / DOES.
NO, SUBJECT + DON’T / DOESN’T.
Example: Do your brother and sister have breakfast before school?
Yes, they do. / No, they don’t.
Does Evelyn do her homework at night?
Yes, she does. / No, she doesn’t.
