1. Point out the name of the era and period for each one of the following
ancestral species: Eoraptor dinosaur, Ichthyosaurs, Dragonfly,
Scorpions and Frilled shark.
SPECIES ERA PERIOD
Eoraptor
dinosaur
Mesozoic Era Late Triassic period,
approximately 223 to
228 million years ago.
Ichthyosaurus Mesozoic Era Triassic to early
Jurassic period
Dragonfly Paleozoic Era From the
Carboniferous and
the Permian to our
time
Scorpions Paleozoic Era Silurian period
Frilled shark Mesozoic Era Late Cretaceous (c.
95 mya) and the Late
Jurassic (150 mya)
epochs.
2. Mention the habitat and regions of the world where the following
endangered species are located.
SPECIE HABITAT
Bluefin tuna Sleek giants with blue and gray
coloring, bluefin tuna are one of
the largest fish in the ocean and
can grow to weigh more than
1,000 pounds. Their bodies are
muscular, and they have short
pectoral fins compared to other
tunas. They are found throughout
the North Atlantic Ocean. They
can sustain cold and warm
temperatures and frequently dive
to depths of 500 to 1,000 meters.
Spawning habitat for the western
population is in the Gulf of
Mexico, while the eastern
population spawns in the
Mediterranean Sea.
Mexican Gray Wolf Roughly five feet in length,
Mexican gray wolves generally
weigh between 50 and 80
pounds. Their coats are bu,
gray, and rust colored, often with
distinguishing facial patterns.
They have large heads with thick
muzzles, bushy tails, oversized
paws, and long legs. Wolves are
known for their keen sense of
smell, excellent hearing, and
binocular vision. Mexican gray
wolves are the smallest of all the
gray wolf subspecies in North
America.
Mexican gray wolves are found in
a variety of habitats, including
mountain woodlands and the
Chihuahuan and Sonoran
deserts, historically Mexican gray
wolves were found throughout
southwestern Texas, southern
New Mexico, southeastern
Arizona, and as far south as
central Mexico. Today,
reintroduced wolves are limited
to the Gila Headwaters
ecosystem in eastern Arizona and
western New Mexico.
Jaguar It inhabits dense tropical forests,
rainy and spiny forests, montane,
pine-oak, tropical evergreen,
deciduous, and sub deciduous
forests, as well as swamps and
mangroves. The jaguar's
historical range spanned from
the southwestern United States
to southern Argentina, but due to
habitat destruction and hunting
for its beautiful fur, it is now only
found in 33% of the range. from
its original distribution.
3. Identify the actions of the last few years that have led to the extinction
of the three species mentioned above (at least one action for each
species) and analyze the dierence between this type of extinction and
the one that has happened through natural selection in remote times.
SPECIES ACTIONS DIFFERENCES
FROM
NATURAL
SELECTION
Black Rhino Hunting for their
horns obtention
Humans caused their
extinction.
Hawaiian Crow Habitat loss and
predation
Humans caused their
extinction.
Golden Toad Climate change and
habitat loss.
Humans caused their
extinction.
Natural selection is the process by which better-adapted organisms
displace less-adapted ones through the slow accumulation of favorable
genetic changes in the population over generations.
The extension of these species was not due to natural selection, but
rather, in an unnatural way, the human being pushed these species to
extinction with their actions such as hunting and destruction of their
habitats.
4. Explain in detail how the extinction of each of the above species is
impacting or could impact other living beings and the environment.
SPECIES IMPACT OF EXTINCT
Bluefin tuna In addition to the definitive loss
of the species, the consequences
can range from ecological to
economic and political. As part of
the ecological consequences,
there would be a chain eect
with respect to other species,
which would alter their
ecosystem and their functioning.
In this way, the food chain would
also be aected. Also as part of
the economic and political
consequences for those countries
that most consume this fish and
import or export it, the final
extinction of this species would
have an impact on their
economy.
Mexican Gray Wolf By accelerating the extinction of
this species we are unbalancing
the ecosystem in which they
inhabited and we are also
destroying the natural
environment. Species interact
with ecosystems, and if these are
aected, the ecosystems will also
be aected, and vice versa.
Jaguar The disappearance of the jaguar
with the alpha predator from its
habitat would lead to the
population growth of herbivorous
animals, a situation that would
create erosion in these lands.
5. Write suggestions (one for each species) to avoid the extinction of the
species and explain the importance of this type of activities so thathuman beings become aware of the risk we are in altering biological
processes.
➔ Bluefin tuna: To prevent the extinction of the bluefin tuna,
we can develop a recovery system that includes a substantial
reduction in the fishing and fattening quota in farms, as well as
the protection of the reproduction areas of this tuna, establish a
minimum catch size that fits at the age of sexual maturity of the
species, apply an independent observer program on tuna vessels
and on fattening farms to ensure that juveniles are not caught
and that the quota is respected, etc.
➔ Mexican Gray Wolf: The conservation actions of the
species consist of the rehabilitation, release of specimens, and
monitoring of the population in the wild, as well as the mitigation
of the risks faced by the specimens.
➔ Jaguar: To preserve eectively, the following actions can be
used: the preservation of their habitats and populations of the
same species, regulate and prohibit the illegal hunting of these
specimens together with the prey they consume, increase the
participation of society in the protection of the Jaguar and its
habitat, etc.
6. Write a conclusion about the research where you talk about the
learning achieved and the usefulness of it.
In conclusion, all these species contributed in their own way to their
ecosystems in their own eras and periods. Naturally, some species
cease to exist due to natural and unavoidable causes to give way to
another species and maintain the natural balance of an ecosystem, but
regularly for a long time, human beings have been accelerating the
extinction of some species, breaking that balance for our own sake.
selfish interests, which leads me to the conclusion that human beings
have to learn to adapt to their ecosystem instead of adapting the
ecosystem to themselves, they must learn to live in harmony with other
species to maintain the natural balance of things.
