Due 1 to the influence of li festyle behaviour on chronic disease health outcomes, GPs may counsel an individual about nutrition to assist the individual to improve their nutrition behaviour. 1 Patients with a positive regard for their heal th care are more likely to adhere to lifestyle 1 5 changes which have been recommended by a health professional. lt is unclear whether this relatlonship extends to the context of nutrition and general practice. The management of 1 Type 2 diabetes presents as a relevant :scenario to investigate patients' perceptlons of nutrition care provided by Aust ralian GPs. Objectives. This study examines the perceptions of individuals with Type 2 diabetes 10 regarding the nutrition care they have received from GPs. Methods. Nine hundred and thirty·nine individuals with Type 2 diabetes completed a 54- item online survey. Individual survey items related to demographic information, health· r elated attributes, perspectives on ideal care and reflections on previous care. Results. Eighty-four per cent of respondents perceived that ideal management of Type 2 15 diabetes by GPs includes nutri tion care, however, only 43% of respondents report to have _____ 1 _________________________________________________ __________________________________ _ 44 -----, ---------------------------------------------------------------------------received t his care from a CP. Over 91% of r espondents are satisfi ed with their CP regarding nutrition care, but only 34% of respondents believe this care has been effective in improving their persona l nutritlon behaviour. Los recursos que se utilizan para hacer referencia a investigaciones previas son: 1) Identificación del autor(es) en el sujeto de la oración: Thus, Píke et al reportad that women who usad OCS wlth high progestagen "potency• for more than 4 years befare age 25 were ovar four times more like/y to have breas/ cancer befare age 37 than women who did not use these contraceptivas before age 25. 2) Identificación de los investigadores mediante el uso de sustantivos comunes: These lnvestigators demonstrated that nasal installatlon of allergen to atopic lndividuals elevated the concentration of kinins in lavage fluid, correlating with symptoms, P-tosyl-1-arginine methyl ester (TAME) estrae actfvity, and histamlne release. 3) Referencia a investigaciones previas: A growing body of data shows that blood transfusions have immuno/ogice/ effects on patients and experimental anima/s beyond /hose of a/loímmunisalion to blood ce// antigens. 48 4) Referencia a los resultados de investigaciones previas: The flndíngs supporting thls conclusion come from more than two score prospecllve epidemio/ogic studies in meny countries throughout the world ... 5) Uso de citas integrales/no integrales (CONSULTAR GUIA 6): Recen/ studies in genetic research have a/so identified /he genetic variants linked with T2DM.1.R.11. INTRODUCTION 1 lnternational workshops which have examined <1>primaty care physlcians' nutritlon practicas have concluded that effective nutrition interaction in general practice is possible.1-" This poses the quaslion of how (2lAustrallan .. general .. practitloners (GPs) perceiva thalr nutrilion cara rasponsibilitias. 5 In Australia, GPs hava figurad pradominantly In tha cara of patlants with chronlc illnassas.s With the introduction of systematic care of patients with chronic disease,6 Australian GPs are provided incentives to complete <3>patient care plans, arrange team care and review patients' progress. 7 In practica, thls maans that GPs take on the additional rasponsibility of coordinating tha (a)involvamant of othar sarvice providars in tha cara of chronic diseasa patiants. With this 10 addilional responsibility, it is unclear how GPs view their involvement in nutrition care. Should they provide complete nutrition counselling as part of lheir medical role, collaborate in a shared doctor-dietitian partnership or (4)refer patienls to dieticians? Two Australian studias have examinad GPs involvemant in chronlc disease care.a.e Oldroyd et al.ª examinad Australian GPs' role in chronic disaase care. This study showed that the majority 15 of GPs viewed their ro le in chronic disease careas coordinators of careas well as advocates for patients. This included teaching patients about their illness and helping them understand the specialists' recommendations. Kokanovic and Manderson9 identified two key slralegies used by Australian GPs when discussing diagnosis, treatmant and care of type two diabetes with immigrant Australians: normalizing ((5l!!.1!!'!!!!'!!~}.r:i.9 .. ~~Y.~.~!~.~t!!!~~~--!~ .. ~~-~-~ .. Olher studies have examined (bltreatment roles1º and <•)doctor- patient relationships in nutrition care.11- 14 In 1993, Ammerman et a1.10 (dlsurveyed residen! doctors and physicians in the us regarding their treatment ro les in regards to cholesterol reduclion. They showed that doctors 25 provided three roles: usual care (gave a stern warning about <•>the heallh risks of curren! die! and little practica! food advice), instrumental care (practica! nutrilion and food advice) and affeclive 56 care (a focus on patients' altitudes). Van Dillen11 identified five nutrition communication styles among Dutch GPs: informational (short explanation and informational materials), (l)reference (refer to dletitians), motivational (continua! discussion), confrontational (present the facts) and 30 hollstlc (discussion about the lmpact of lhe problem, anthropometric (glmeasures). An information-giving style of nutrition communication was the dominant strategy among these doctors. While these studíes provlde an insight into how doctors communicate with their patients, they do not tell us how Australían GPs' perceive their nutrition care role. Thererore, <7lthe alm. of thls_study was to examl ne Australlan GPs' perceptlons or their roles in the 35 nutrition care of adult cardiac patients and to ídentify factors that influence their participatlon in nutrition care.
