La famosa “-ing”
Explorando sus usos
Un verbo terminado en –ing puede tener diferentes funciones dependiendo el lugar que ocupa en la oración.
- Como verbo principal de la oración o clause
Este es el seguramente la primera función que aprendemos , y lo hacemos cuando vemos los usos de los tiempos en continuo. La –ing es el verbo principal de la oración (verb in the present particple)
E.g: “…air pollution nationally has been generally dropping”
“Most big cities are already doing that”
- Como adjetivo
En esta función el verbo terminado en –ing modifica directamente a un sustantivo.  
Los adjetivos que terminan en –ing se utilizan para describir algo o a alguien que nos hace sentir de una manera determinada. 
(present participle adjective)
E.g: 
“…Diesels are much more polluting than petrol cars on a local scale…”
“…gas for heating homes and offices.”
- Como sustantivo siendo el nucleo de un grupo nominal
En esta función el verbo terminado en –ing tiene la función de sustantivo, es el núcleo de un sujeto, de un objeto. (Gerund)
E.g: 
“…it's estimated in the UK to contribute to the shortening of the lives of around 40,000 people a year…”
“Solving air pollution needs a many-sided approach”
Analyse these examples extracted from the text: “Genetically modified insects could disrupt international
food trade”

While these males can still mate, the resulting eggs are not viable.
