Por ejemplo: realize (darse cuenta), fabric (género o tela), actually (realmente). 1 | 16 José María Fernández - Ana Claudia Paez Argentina: Agriculture, forestry, and fishing Argentina is one of the world’s major exporters of soybeans and wheat, as well as meat. It is also one of the largest producers of wool and wine, but most of its wine is consumed domestically. Although agriculture is an impor- tant source of export earnings, it now accounts for a small percentage of the overall GDP, and it employs only a tiny portion of the nation’s workforce. Wheat is Argentina’s largest crop in harvested land area, and it is the main crop in the cattle-raising southern Pampas of Buenos Aires and La Pampa prov- inces. Wheat and corn (maize) dominate in the north. Planting of corn and wheat began simultaneously in the northern Pampas. By the end of World War II, however, foreign competition and industry had cut Argentine corn produc- tion in half, and production has increased only gradually since then. About half of the corn produced is used for livestock feed. The total area of the Pampas planted in sorghum and soybeans has grown since 1960 to rank just behind that of wheat and corn. These crops also serve primarily as livestock feed and are valuable for export. Another crop of the northern Pampas is flax. GUÍA DE TRABAJO 2 January 14, 2014 Dryness Continues in Argentina Argentina is forecast to harvest 20 million hectares of soybeans in the 2013/2014 soybean season and produce 54.5 million metric tons. Dry condi- tions in October limited sunflower and corn plantings and slowed final corn planting in the country. November rains replenished upper soil moisture ahead of soybeanplanting. Dry and hot conditions limited soil moisture re- serves in December. Less corn area and more soybean area are expected as a result. By the end of December 2013, large areas of Argentina, particularly in southern Buenos Aires and La Pampa provinces showed dry soils and stressed vegetation from high temperatures. Rio Negro Program Supports Development of Irrigation System These drying conditions occurred coincidentally with the announce- ment of proposed new irrigation incentives mentioned at a recent, workshop in the Rio Negro region. Rio Negro Province is located south of Argentina’s main soybean producing provinces. The workshop was | 18 José María Fernández - Ana Claudia Paez organized by the provincial Agricultural Services Program (PROSAP) with the Rural Change unit (UCAR). The workshop encouraged development of irrigation systems, because adding irrigation in the region would opti- mize use of crop production land and possibly help meet the grain quan- tity goals suggested in the Argentine Strategic Plan for Agrifood for more grain production in the short-term plan. The December work- shop established the groundwork for developing new, efficient irriga- tion while boosting investment in the region. The Argentine government has been developing plans for more irrigation. Use of irrigation in this region could potentially expand and increase soybean production as well. Las ESTRUCTURALES / FUNCIONALES son palabras que no encierran un concepto en sí mismas, sino que funcionan como nexos, enlaces entre las palabras conceptuales para dar coherencia al texto, como por ejem- plo: artículos (a, an, the), preposiciones (in, on, with, of), adjetivos determinantes (this, that, these, those), conjunciones (and, or, but…), pronombres (I, you, it, they…) Actividades: 1. No intervienen verbos conjugados. GUÍA DE TRABAJO 4 Forty seven experiment stations, 260 extension units, and 15 research institutes, enable INTA to contribute substantially to production and land management change processes that Argentine agriculture needs to be able to compete in the world's new production and marketing scenario. The following pages contain a short description of Argentina and its agriculture, and a description of INTA´s activities and action subjects, and its research and 1extension strategies. INTA relies on 15 2Regional Centers with 47 Agricultural and Livestock Experimental Stations and over 260 Extension Units that cover the whole country plus 4 Research Centers with 15 Institutes. Headcount amounts to 5,868 3employees: 44% are professionals, 29% are support staff and 28% are technicians. Furthermore, INTA has 362 trainees (4professionals recently graduated from Universities). 5The Board of Directors, formed by representatives of the public sector (National Executive Branch, Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food, Schools of Agronomy and Veterinary of National Universities) and organizations of farmers (FAA, CONINAGRO, SRA, CRA and AACREA), defines policies with a national scope. Likewise, Regional and Research Center Boards offer to agricultural entities, provinces, universities and scientific community the opportunity to take part in the relevant decision-making processes. | 24 José María Fernández - Ana Claudia Paez 6The National Directorate carries out the policies issued by the Board of Directors, to which it reports, being responsible for INTA's management and administration. Regional and Research Centers carry out 7the policies issued by the Board of Directors through the National Directorate as well as those issued by the Center Councils, which are implemented through Experimental Stations and Institutes. National Programs (Value Chains, Eco-regions and Productive Systems, 8Territory Development and 9Small-Scope Subsistence Agriculture) and the Strategic Areas survey and assess demands, guide and participate in alloca- tion processes of existing resources, as well as in the prospective analysis of capacity design and in medium- and long-term requirements. Executive structure bases on a matrix function and integrates action through program tools that apply the policies of the Institutional Strategic Plan in the medium term. 10The management model induces a matrix and networked operation, and ensures that the resource assignment and financ- ing strategy comply with the institutional objectives and priorities. Fuente consultada: http://inta.gob.ar/ Recordemos... No in- cluye una acción o verbo conjugado. A bright spot for the economy in 2006 was the agri- cultural sector. In the first part of this decade many agricultural producers saw commodity prices fall while the cost of their inputs rose. In August, 1997 Argentina, for the first time in 67 years, exported a shipment of beef to the United States. 7. Program backed by the IDB since 1996 benefits farmers beyond the Pampas with projects involving productive infrastructure, extension services and agro-food businesses. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved a $230 million loan to promote the development of Argentina’s non-Pampean regional rural econo- mies by making them more competitive and increasing their exports, esti- mating this will benefit 17,000 farmers and 490,000 other persons in rural areas. The new loan will also benefit areas affected by an eruption of the Puyehue volcano earlier this year. Since 1996 the IDB has provided Argentina a total of $755 million in fi- nancing to support its Provincial Agricultural Services Program (PROSAP). The new operation will help increase productivity and exports of regions beyond the Pampas, Argentina’s traditional grain growing and cattle ranching plains. These regions grow grapes, vegetables, fruits and rice, among other cash crops. The program will also improve the productivity of dairy, beef and sheep farming, and help strengthen firefighting and prevention services in order to reduce losses by rural producers and communities. This is the second loan financed using the conditional credit line for investment projects “Provincial Agricultural Services Program PROSAP,” ap- proved by the IDB in January 2008. One of the main components of the new program will finance the im- provement or expansion of rural roads, rural power grids, irrigation and drainage systems, and other infrastructure investments to promote rural de- velopment and economic recovery in areas hit by natural disasters. Farmers will also benefit from agro-food projects to improve their competitiveness and to foster exports and job creation. Another component seeks to boost farmer competitiveness by support- ing the development of agro-food clusters and by providing incentives to fi- nance investments that will link rural producers with agro-food value chains. The loan is for 25 years, with a 4-year grace period and a LIBOR-based variable interest rate. Argentina is one of the best food-producing and food-exporting countries of the world, with an estimated 27,200,000 hectares (67,210,000 acres) of arable and permanent cropland. Agriculture and animal husbandry have traditionally supplied the nation with 70–95% of its export earnings, and the landowners have alternated the two activities in accordance with prices on the world market. As of 2001, agriculture made up 5% of the GDP. Agricultural products also accounted for 41% of exports by value. One of the most important factors in Argentine agriculture is the advanced degree of mechanization; in 1998, an estimated 280,000 tractors and 50,000 harvester-threshers were in use. The principal agricultural region consists of the humid pampas, one of the world's greatest reaches of arable land. Argentine agriculture is virtually coextensive with this region, although efforts have been made to spread it into other areas. Citrus fruit, tobacco, cotton, and sugarcane are cultivated outside the pampas. Wheat is the leading crop. Argentina accounted for about 75% of all wheat produced in South America in 1999 and was the world's fifth-leading wheat exporter. The area harvested in 1999 was estimated at 5.8 million hectares (14.3 million acres), and production at 14.5 million tons. Argentina is the fourth-largest corn-growing country in the world. The area harvested in 1999 was 2.5 million hectares (6.2 million acres), and production was 13.2 million tons. Barley is favored as the grain of most competitive yield and stronger resistance to disease; types for feed and beer are grown in the pampas areas having soil unfavorable or a climate too rigorous for wheat. Harvests once amounted to 659,000 tons per season in the early 1970s,but in 1999 production was smaller, only 400,000 tons. Rice is a major crop, with a 1999 production of 1,576,000 tons on plantings of 281,000 hectares (694,000 acres). Argentina is one of the world's most important producers of flaxseed (linseed). Most of the crop is exported in the form of linseed oil. The province of Tucumán dominates the sugar-raising industry, which dates from 1646; sugarcane production in 1999 was 19.4 million tons. To control overproduction, the government formed the National Sugar Co. in 1970 and forbade the construction of new sugar mills through the end of the decade. | 38 José María Fernández - Ana Claudia Paez Cotton growing dates from 1909 and is concentrated in Chaco Province. Sunflower seed oil is a major industrial plant product; 3.8 million hectares (9.6 million acres) of sunflowers were harvested in 1999, producing 6,500,000 tons of sunflower seeds. Tobacco is raised in several northern provinces, especially Misiones; production in 1999 was an estimated 113,000 tons. Soybean production, only 78,000 tons in 1971–72, increased to 7.1 million tons by 1985– 86, and to 18 million tons in 1999. It is one of the most profitable crops. Fruit growing has developed rapidly since the 1940s. Estimates for 1999 fruit production (in tons) were apples, 1,056,000; oranges, 780,000; lemons and limes, 1,050,000; peaches and nectarines, 250,000; and grapefruit, 230,000. The province of Mendoza is the center for the nation's vineyards. In 1999, grape production was 2.5 million tons. Argentina is one of the world's leading producers of wine, accounting for 1.26 million tons in 1999, or 4.5% of the world's total production. Por ejemplo: NATURAL fertilizer CHEMICAL fertilizer IMPORTED fertilizer This fertilizer is INDUSTRIAL. These fertilizers are ORGANIC. Los adjetivos tienen tres grados de comparación. Positivo: large, intensive Comparativo: largER, MORE intensive (than…) Superlativo: the largest, the MOST intensive. Hay algunos pocos adjetivos que no cumplen con estas reglas, y tie- nen comparativos y superlativos irregulares: Adjective Comparative Superlative good better best bad worse worst little less least much more most far further / farther furthest / farthest Comparativos de Igualdad: (Not) as+adjetivo+ as Wheat can be AS PROFITABLE AS soybean. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. .............................................................................. ........................................................................... 6. Agribusiness involves all the steps required to send an ag- ricultural good to market: pro- duction, processing, and distri- bution. It is an important component of countries with arable land, since agricultural products can be exported. Agribusiness treats the different aspects of raising agricultural products as an ................................................. system. Farmers raise animals and harvest fruits and vegetables with the help of sophisticated harvest- ing techniques, including the use of GPS to direct harvesting operations. Manufacturers develop more efficient machines that can drive themselves. Processing plants determine the best way to clean and package livestock for shipping. While each subset of the industry is unlikely to interact directly with the consumer, each is focused on operating efficiently in order to keep prices reasonable. ..................................................... forces have a significant im- pact on the agribusiness sector. Changes in consumer taste alter what prod- ucts are grown and raised. For example,a shift in consumer tastes away from red meat may cause demand (and prices) for beef to fall, while increased demand for produce may shift the mix of fruits and vegetables that farmers raise. Businesses unable to ................................................. change in accordance to domestic demand may look to export their product abroad, but if that fails they may not be able to stay in business. Countries with farming industries face consistent pressures from global competition. Products such as ........................................, corn, and soybeans tend to be similar in different locations, making them commodities. Remaining competitive requires agribusinesses to operate more efficiently, which can require investments in new technologies, new ways of fertilizing and watering crops, and new ways of connecting to the global market. Global prices of agricultural products may ............................... rapidly, making production planning a complicated activity. Farmers may also face a reduc- tion in usable land as suburban and urban areas move into their areas. Agribusiness in Mercosur: Transformations of the past and promises for the future Over the last thirty years, Brazil and its neighbours ceased to import food and became some of the world’s major exporters of agricultural crops. Understanding what drove this transformation is necessary if one wishes to participate in future business opportunities in South American agriculture. Mercosur’s evolution in the agricultural crops market. 1 South America, and specifically the Mercosur member nations, is one of the most impor- tant agricultural exporting regions in the world today. However, the region’s role as a “granary of mankind” was neither natural nor obvious. Although Argentina has produced and exported wheat for more than a century, oth- er Mercosur nations, such as Brazil, Paraguay, and Bolivia, have only been large food importers since 1980. The dramatic change in the region’s agri- cultural balance occurred over the last thirty years despite few technologi- cal resources, somewhat unstructured governments, and limited availabil- ity of capital for investments. South America has great diversity in soil and climate conditions, which enables the production of a broad base of agri- cultural crops and animal proteins. The main agricultural products in the region, those that go beyond internal consumption and generate earnings from exports, range from wine production in temperate regions of Chile and Argentina, to farmed salmon in southern Chile, to milk in Uruguay, to corn, fruits and nuts in subtropical areas. 2 For the five major global food crops — soybeans, corn, rice, wheat, and sugar— Mercosur is the world’s third largest producer. In the 2009/10 harvest year, Mercosur produced about 319 million metric tons, or 11% of world production of these crops. | 44 José María Fernández - Ana Claudia Paez 3 Mercosur´s dominance in soybean production is recent. In 1979, global soybean production was about 89 million tons, and Mercosur accounted for only 17% of the total. The global production balance shifted gradually, and by the 2009/10 soybean harvest, the Mercosur countries produced 133 million tons, or 43% of world production. Growth in Brazilian produc- tion was the main contributor to Mercosur’s growth, but Argentina also saw significant soybean volume growth over the period. 4 In the 1970s, soybeans were primarily produced in Argentina and Brazil’s southern states of Rio Grande do Sul, Paraná, and the southern part of Mato Grosso do Sul. At the time, the production in Rio Grande do Sul and Paraná exceeded Argentina’s total output, as Argentina was still very fo- cused on wheat and livestock. 5 As soybean demand grew in the 1980s, production spread to other re- gions and countries. Argentinean production reached 7 million tons, and Paraguay began to gain relevance in the marketplace. Soybean production also increased in Mato Grosso and Goiás, and these states became impor- tant growing grounds for the oilseed. Argentina continued to grow its output throughout the 1990s and reached 10 million tons of annual soybean production. At the same time, Uruguay entered the market on a large scale, while agricultural frontiers in Brazil expanded to include the states of Minas Gerais and Bahia. Mato Grosso and Paraná consolidated to be the two most important growing states in the late 1990s. Demand for major food crops will continue to grow and must be supplied mainly by Mercosur 6 Food production growth will be driven by both the growing world population and by income growth. According to the United Nations Organization, the global population is expected to increase from 6.8 billion today to 8.9 bil- lion by 2050—an average annual growth rate of 0.7%. Developing economies—those where growing incomes are driving impor- tant changes in consumption and feeding habits—will account for the ma- jority of global population growth. Populations in these countries will be larger, but also richer. This means they will, on average, consume a great- er number of calories each year. Furthermore, populations in these coun- tries will also likely diversify and enrich their diets by replacing or com- plementing vegetable protein with animal protein. This puts greater pres- sure on the global agricultural system that produces soybeans, and also increases pressure on corn and feed wheat producers, as larger quantities of multiple commodities will be required to feed growing livestock herds. Organic crops increasing in Brazil, peaks in Argentina Brazil and Argentina are becoming important players in organic agriculture, particularly the organic soybean market. In 2005, Brazil’s organic soybean production fell dramatically. The main problem was the weakened Brazilian currency, the real, which is now worth less than one-half of a US dollar. Klein describes Brazil’s organic soybean production as “flat.” Brazil has produced about 30,000 tons of organic soybeans in each of the past three years. The weakened real has hurt Brazil’s organic sugar exports. Brazil pro- duces organic sugar, and demand has been growing, but Klein says exporters will sell if they can cover their expenses. Overall, Brazil’s organic production increased by 20 percent in 2005 to 1.1 million acres. The country’s ministerof agriculture, Roberto Rodrigues, recently announced plans to expand Brazil’s organic production to 20 percent of the country’s total agricultural production. Rodrigues also announced the establishment of a government seal guar- anteeing the origin and quality of Brazil’s organic agricultural products, which will enhance the country’s ability to access international markets. While Brazil’s organic production is growing, Argentina’s organic crop production has reached a plateau. While Brazil’s climate favors production of more tropical crops, such as coffee, sugar cane, cocoa, and bananas, Argentina’s organic production is more grain-based. It grows soybeans, sunflower seeds, corn, flax, and wheat, which are mostly exported. Argentina will harvest about 12,000 tons of organic soybeans this April, the majority of which will be exported to Europe and the United States for feed use. It is easier for South American farms to shift to organic because large ar- eas of farmland have not been treated with agricultural chemicals. - El verbo pasa a tener la estructura: verbo auxiliar to be + partici- pio pasado. (El auxiliar “to be” en el mismo tiempo verbal que el verbo principal en la oración en voz activa) Some American farmers use chemical fertilizers. Chemical fertilizers are used by some American farmers.
