LANGUAGE AND SEMANTICS
This section considers the functional neuroanatomy that underlies the comprehension and
production of spoken and written words. This first chapter addresses three of the fundamental
components of language: auditory speech comprehension, speech production, and semantic
retrieval (see Fig. 26.1). This is followed by a more detailed consideration of the organisation of
the semantic system in Chapter 27, the neural systems for reading in Chapter 28, and the nature
of the neuronal abnormality in developmental dyslexia in Chapter 29. The section then concludes
in Chapter 30 with a methodological review of the most efficient experimental designs and
analysis for functional imaging studies of language.
