Part 3 Practical use of molecular studies The results of investigation on the mechanisms of pathogenicity and resist- ance in infectious plant diseases are primarily important as a fundamental basis for the development of highly efficient plant disease and pest control measures. These investigations have not changed the plant protection strategy (and they could not have changed it): similar to the conventional systems, there are two prevailing approaches: chemical protection and genome modifi- cation to develop cultivars resistant against pathogens.
