Michael holds a PhD in clinical and community 
psychology and has a private practice in San 
Francisco. He is the author of eleven picture 
books including May Your Life Be Deliciosa 
(Pura Belpré Honor), Accordionly: Abuelo and 
Opa Make Music, and Rainbow: A First Book of 
Pride, which Publishers Weekly called “A joyous 
tribute to LGBTQ families.” He lives with his 
husband in Marin County, California. They are 
the proud parents of a newly minted elementary 
school teacher.

designer, and educator best known for his 
award-winning children’s picture books. Among 
many other accolades, he has received the 
Pura Belpré Honor three times, for Frida Kahlo 
and Her Animalitos, written by Monica Brown, 
which was also named a New York Times Best 
Illustrated Children’s Book; Green Is a Chile 
Pepper, written by Roseanne Greenfield Thong; 
and Gracias/Thanks, written by Pat Mora. He

En todo el libro, el ilustrador John Parra

artesanía ornamental típica de México que 
consiste en papel de China de varios 
colores con figuras recortadas. ¡Sigue 
las instrucciones para hacer tu propio 
hermoso papel picado!
Paso 1Paso 1
Dobla un cuadro de papel de China de color 
por la mitad. 
Paso 2Paso 2
Manteniendo el papel de China doblado, 
pon encima la plantilla de modo que la línea 
negra coincida con el borde doblado del 
papel de China. Traza el diseño de la 
plantilla sobre un lado del papel. 
Paso 3Paso 3
Manteniendo aun el papel de China doblado, 
usa con cuidado las tijeras para recortar los 
diseños. Una vez que hayas recortado todo, 
desdobla el papel de seda para revelar tu 
papel picado.

• Pegamento o cinta adhesiva
• Plantillas de papel picado
• Lápiz
• Impresora
• Papel de impresora
• Tijeras
• Cuerda o cinta
• Papel de China
Paso 4Paso 4
Repite los pasos 1 al 3 para hacer más hojas 
de papel picado. Con pegamento o cinta 
adhesiva,fija las hojas a un pedazo de cuerda 
o cinta. Una vez colocadas todas la hojas, 
cuélgalo y disfruta de la decoración festiva.

To make your own papel picado, print out any of the designs below. 
With the help of an adult, use scissors to carefully cut out the white 
sections of the design, leaving the gray sections. Trace the pattern 
design onto a piece of folded tissue paper. Remember, since the tissue 
paper is folded, the design samples are just one half of the papel picado!

Michael Genhart se inspiró en las historias 
personales que le contó su mamá cuando era niño 
para escribir El español es la lengua de mi familia. 
Michael tiene un doctorado en psicología clínica 
y comunitaria y tiene un consultorio en San 
Francisco. Es autor de once libros ilustrados, entre 
ellos May Your Life Be Deliciosa (Medalla de Honor 
Pura Belpré), Accordionly: Abuelo and Opa Make 
Music, y Rainbow: A First Book of Pride, al que 
Publishers Weekly llamó “Un alegre tributo a las 
familias LGBTQ”. Vive con su esposo en el condado 
Marin de California, y son padres orgullosos de 
una maestra de primaria recién graduada.
 
John Parra es un ilustrador, artista, 
diseñador y educador famoso por sus 
galardonados libros infantiles ilustrados. Entre 
muchos otros reconocimientos, ha recibido la 
Medalla de Honor Pura Belpré tres veces, por 
Frida Kahlo and Her Animalitos, escrito por 
Monica Brown, que también fue nombrado Mejor
