Georges K6hler (1 946-1 995) Georges K6hler died on 1 March 1995, at the age of 48. Together with Cesar Milstein and Niels Jerne, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1984. I first met him when he was a teacher at an EMBO course on cell fusion, held in Naples in 1977. He was a quiet and modest man and it was a privilege to have been taught by him. The invention of the technique for making monoclonal antibodies has had an enormous impact on medicine and basic biological science, and has been the catalyst for numerous other discov- eries. It will undoubtedly be the key to numerous discoveries in the future. In reflecting upon his death at such an early age, we should take solace in the knowledge that his place in history is assured.
