3. Pueblo Y Ciudad
 
Antes de su gran cita con Sofía, Alejandro tenía que hacer algunos
encargos para asegurarse de que todo estuviera listo. En primer lugar,
necesitaba ir al banco para retirar suficiente dinero, que le alcanzara para
el día ajetreado que se avecinaba. En el camino al banco, se detuvo en su
cafetería favorita para comprar algo de cafeína, muy necesaria para
comenzar el día.
Before his big date with Sofía today, Alejandro had a few errands to run to
make sure everything was ready. First of all, a trip to the bank was needed,
so he could withdraw enough cash for the busy day ahead. Along the way to
the bank, he stopped by his favorite coffee shop to pick up some much
needed caffeine to start the day.
Luego, tuvo que dirigirse a la oficina de correos y dejar un correo que
estaba atrasado. Después de eso, fue al centro comercial a buscar un nuevo
atuendo para usar ese día. Estuvo en dos tiendas de ropa e incluso tuvo
tiempo suficiente para hacerse un nuevo corte de cabello en la barbería.
Next, he had to make a run to the post office and drop off some mail that
was overdue and nearly late. After that, it was off to the mall to find a new
outfit to wear on today's date. He perused two clothing stores and even had
enough time to get himself a new haircut at the barber shop.
A las 2:00 pm, Alejandro y Sofía se encontraron para hacer un recorrido
por la ciudad. Comenzaron caminando por el parque para ponerse al día
con lo que había sucedido durante la semana. Dentro del parque había una
gran plaza donde la pareja encontró un pequeño concierto de una banda de
rock. Después de escuchar algunas canciones, dejaron el parque y se
dirigieron hacia un parque de diversiones local.
At 2:00 pm, Alejandro and Sofía met up, ready to take a tour around town.
They started by walking around the park, catching up on what happened
with each other during the week. Inside the park was a large plaza, where
the couple found a small concert by a rock band. After hearing a few songs,
they left the park and headed towards a local amusement park.
Debido a un gran accidente, el parque de diversiones estaba cerrado, así
que, como plan alternativo, la pareja decidió ir a cine. Por suerte para
Sofía, esa tarde pudieron encontrar una película de terror. Tenían una hora
de espera para entrar a ver la película, de modo que tomaron una cena
temprano en un restaurante cercano con el tiempo suficiente para regresar
al cine. La película resultó ser bastante genérica y predecible, pero hubo
escenas que los hicieron saltar del susto, haciendo que tanto Alejandro
como Sofía se sintieran realmente bien.
Due to a large accident, the amusement park had to be shut down, so as a
back-up plan, the couple decided to go to the movie theater instead. To
Sofía's luck, they were able to find a horror movie playing that week. It
would be an hour-long wait for the movie, so they grabbed an early dinner
at a nearby restaurant with just enough time to make it back to the theater.
The movie turned out to be fairly generic and predictable, but there was one
jump scare that got both Alejandro and Sofía really, really good.
Cuando llegó la noche, la pareja tuvo la sensación de no querer quedarse
fuera, en la ciudad, hasta demasiado tarde, pero acordaron tomar una
bebida en un bar único que encontraron buscando con sus teléfonos
inteligentes. Tenía un tema de castillo medieval y estaba decorado con
pancartas, armaduras y sillas que parecían tronos. Tuvieron la oportunidad
de conversar y junto con ello vino más bebida.
As the evening came, the couple had a mutual feeling of not wanting to stay
out too late in the city, but they agreed to have one drink at a unique bar
they found searching on their smartphones. It had a medieval castle theme
and was decorated with banners, suits of armor, and chairs that looked like
thrones. The conversation picked up between the two and along with it
came more drinking.
¡Ahora ambos estaban demasiado ebrios para regresar a casa sanos y
salvos! No sintiéndose con ganas de ir a discotecas, esperaron dos horas
para estar sobrios y recuperarse antes de conducir a casa. Llamar un taxi
era una opción loca y costosa, y esperar no fue tan difícil. Para pasar el
tiempo, caminaron por el paseo marítimo y se detuvieron en una tienda
para tomar un refrigerio rápido.
Now they were both too intoxicated to drive home safely! Not feeling up
for a night of clubbing, they would wait two hours to sober up before
driving home. Calling a taxi would be a crazy expensive option, and it
wasn't all that much of a wait to begin with. To pass the time, they walked
along the boardwalk and stopped by the convenience store for a quick
snack.
Alejandro y Sofía habían disfrutado mucho de estar juntos, por lo que las
horas pasaron más rápido de lo esperado, y había llegado la hora de
separarse. Un breve beso fue compartido junto con un par de sonrisas
pícaras, y eso fue todo antes de que ambos regresaran a casa.
Alejandro and Sofía thoroughly enjoyed each other's presence, so the hours
passed quicker than expected, but it was time to part ways. A brief kiss was
shared, along with a couple of cheeky smiles, and that was it before they
both returned home.

4. Cartas De La Habana
 
Mirar el mar siempre me recuerda a Peter.Lo imagino en un enorme barco,
alejándose de las costas de Cuba con rumbo hacia no sé dónde. Desde que
se fue he soñado todos los días con él, me imagino todas sus aventuras, sus
paseos por la selva y todas las cosas que a veces me cuenta. 
Looking at the sea always reminds me of Peter. I imagine it in a huge ship,
moving away from the coast of Cuba towards I don't know where. Since he
left I have dreamed of him every day, I imagine all his adventures, his
walks in the jungle and all the things he sometimes tells me.
En La Habana, llegó el verano y el calor se hace cada vez más
insoportable. Los días son lentos, sofocantes y a veces nublados. Escuché
en la radio que en las próximas semanas tal vez venga un huracán. No me
gusta cuando llueve mucho porque hay que encerrarse todo el día en casa.
Mi madre llena todas las ventanas de plástico y cartón, movemos todos los
muebles y parece que estuviésemos dentro de una cueva. 
In Havana, Summer arrived and the heat is every time increasingly
unbearable. The days are slow, suffocating and sometimes cloudy. I heard
on the radio that in the next few weeks a hurricane may come. I don't like it
when it rains a lot because you have to lock yourself up all day at home. My
mother fills all the plastic and cardboard windows, we move all the
furniture and it seems that we were inside a cave.
En mi casa no hay conexión a internet, de hecho, sólo hay en muy pocos
lugares de La Habana. No es común que las personas tengan computadoras
en casa, mucho menos conexión. Desde que se fue Peter, yo voy todos los
días a la biblioteca de la universidad al salir de clases. Mi madre está
contenta pues piensa que estoy estudiando más de lo normal, pero mis
compañeras de clase están preocupadas pues piensan que me convertí en
un cerebrito.
In my house there is no internet connection, in fact, there are only in very
few places in Havana. It is not common for people to have computers at
home, much less connection. Since Peter left, I go to the university library
every day after school. My mother is happy because she thinks that I am
studying more than usual, but my classmates are worried because they think
I became a brain.
“Tú estás muy rara, Daylin,” me dijo mi amiga Martha el otro día.
"You're very weird, Daylin," my friend Martha told me the other day.
“La rara serás tú,” le contesté.
"The weird one will be you," I replied.
Y desde entonces, dejó de invitarme a comer helado con ella por las tardes;
ahora la verdad es que la extraño y tengo pensado pedirle disculpas. Pero
entre la escuela de enfermería, mis clases de arte y mi hora de las cartas
(así le llamé a mi tiempo en la biblioteca escribiéndole a Peter), tengo muy
poco tiempo. Esa se había vuelto mi rutina diaria, hasta que un día cambió.
And since then, he stopped inviting me to eat ice cream with her in the
afternoon; Now the truth is that I miss her and I plan to apologize. But
between nursing school, my art classes and my time for letters (that's what I
called my time in the library writing to Peter), I have very little time. That
had become my daily routine, until one day it changed.
Desde que desperté, el día presagiaba ser extraño. Cuando me levanté de
mi cama, parecía aún ser de noche así que regresé a dormir plácidamente.
Sentía recién haber cerrado mis ojos cuando me despertó un fuerte grito de
mi madre.
Since I woke up, the day presaged to be strange. When I got up from my
bed, it seemed to be still night, so I went back to sleep peacefully. I just felt
that I had closed my eyes when a loud cry from my mother woke me up.
“Daylin, pero ¿qué haces dormida? Es tardísimo, ¿no tienes pensado ir a
la escuela o qué?”
“Daylin, but what are you doing asleep? It's too late, don't you plan on
going to school or what?”
“Pero mamá, si apenas desperté y aún es de noche”.
"But mom, if I just woke up and it’s still night."
“Nada que de noche. Está nublado, nada más. Va a llover por la tarde.
Levántate de inmediato y vas a tener e irte sin desayunar”.
“Nothing at night. It is cloudy, nothing more. It is going to rain in the
afternoon. Get up immediately and you will have and leave without
breakfast.”
Me levanté, me mojé la cara con agua fría, cepillé rápidamente mi cabello
y salí corriendo. El próximo autobús no pasaría hasta dentro de 45 minutos
más, así que ir en bicicleta hasta la escuela era la opción más rápida.
Pedaleé a toda velocidad y en sólo 15 minutos ya estaba en la universidad.
Me dirigí al salón de clases y por la ventana, desde la distancia, pude ver a
la maestra de biología en plena explicación. Me acerqué, esperé el
momento adecuado y cuando ella se dio la vuelta para escribir en el
pizarrón, abrí la puerta intentando no hacer ningún ruido y entré
sigilosamente. 
I got up, wet my face with cold water, quickly brushed my hair and ran. The
next bus would not pass for another 45 minutes, so cycling to school was
the fastest option. I pedaled at full speed and in just 15 minutes I was
already in college. I went to the classroom and through the window, from a
distance, I could see the biology teacher in full explanation. I approached,
waited for the right moment and when she turned around to write on the
board, I opened the door trying not to make any noise and sneaked in.
Repentinamente, todas mis compañeras comenzaron a reír y la maestra se
volteó.
Suddenly, all my classmates started laughing and the teacher turned around.
“¡Daylin! Pero ¿qué haces llegando tan tarde? Además, entrando a mis
espaldas”.
“Daylin! But what are you doing arriving so late? In addition, entering
behind my back.”
“Perdón, maestra, es que mi despertador se descompuso”. 
"Sorry, teacher, my alarm clock broke down."
“Anda, pasa, pero siéntate ya”. 
"Come on, come in, but sit down now."
Fui a mi lugar y me senté, confundida. Mi compañera de enfrente volteó
rápidamente y me dijo:
I went to my place and sat, confused. My partner in front turned quickly
and said:
“¿No te diste cuenta de que traes pantuflas?”
"Didn't you realize you bring slippers?"
Miré a mis pies y oh, sorpresa, había salido tan a prisa que había olvidado
ponerme zapatos. Me sentía en una pesadilla.
I looked at my feet and oh, surprise, I had come out so quickly that I had
forgotten to put on shoes. I felt in a nightmare.
Me sonrojé tanto que parecía un tomate, pero intenté concentrarme y
continuar mis clases normalmente. El día fue largo y tedioso, pero al final
de las clases ya todos, yo incluida, nos habíamos olvidado de que yo estaba
en pantuflas. Decidí continuar mi día con normalidad, con zapatos de
dormir y todo. El cielo seguía completamente oscuro y veía como poco a
poco cada parte de la ciudad era cubierta por una nube negra. Aunque
según la radio no llovería hasta tarde por la noche.
I blushed so much it looked like a tomato, but I tried to concentrate and
continue my classes normally. The day was long and tedious, but at the end
of class and everyone, me included, we had forgotten that I was in slippers.
I decided to continue my day normally, with sleeping shoes and everything.
The sky was still completely dark and I saw how little by little each part of
the city was covered by a black cloud. Although according to the radio it
would not rain until late at night.
Al terminar mis clases, fui a buscar a Adela, una de mis mejores amigas y
compañera de la clase de pintura, pero para mi sorpresa, cuando llegué a
su salón de clases, ella no estaba ahí. Pregunté a varios de sus compañeros,
pero nadie sabía nada de ella. Llamé a su casa y su madre respondió.
When I finished my classes, I went to look for Adela, one of my best
friends and classmate of the painting class, but to my surprise, when I
arrived at her classroom, she was not there. I asked several of her
classmates but nobody knew anything about her. I called his house and his
mother answered.
“Hola, señora Lucía,” dije. “Estoy buscando a Adela en la escuela, pero no
está por ningún lado. ¿Está en casa?”
"Hello, Mrs. Lucia," I said. “I'm looking for Adela at school, but she isn't
anywhere. He's at home?"“Sí, acá está mi niña, pero está muy enferma, no se pudo levantar del dolor
de estómago, parece que ayer que fue a comer helados con las otras niñas y
algo le cayó mal”.
"Yes, here is my girl, but she is very sick, she could not get up from the
stomach ache, it seems that yesterday she went to eat ice cream with the
other girls and something went wrong."
“Qué pena, dígale que lo siento mucho y que espero que se recupere
pronto”.
"What a pity, tell him I'm very sorry and I hope he recovers soon."
Colgué el teléfono y no pude evitar pensar que ahí estaba el segundo mal
augurio del día. Adela está enferma y no tendré nadie con quién platicar en
mi clase de pintura. Pero intenté relajarme, recordé que mi clase de pintura
me hace muy feliz y que después de ella, correría hacia la biblioteca a
escribirle a Peter y si tenía suerte, a leer una más de sus cartas.
I hung up the phone and couldn't help thinking that there was the second
bad omen of the day. Adela is sick and I won't have anyone to talk to in my
painting class. But I tried to relax, I remembered that my painting class
makes me very happy and that after it, I would run to the library to write to
Peter and if I was lucky, to read one more of his letters.
Caminé tranquilamente hacia la escuela de arte. En el camino, varios niños
se rieron de mis particulares zapatos, pero a mí no me importó. Hacía
mucho calor y los rizos de mi cabello se pegaban sobre mi frente. Sentí
ganas de ir a la playa y pasar el día frente al mar, pero no lo hice, continué
caminando hasta llegar a mi clase.
I walked calmly to the art school. Along the way, several children laughed
at my particular shoes, but I didn't care. It was very hot and the curls of my
hair stuck on my forehead. I felt like going to the beach and spending the
day facing the sea, but I didn't, I continued walking until I reached my class.
“Daylin, llegas tarde,” dijo mi maestra de pintura apenas cuando crucé la
puerta. 
"Daylin, you're late," my painting teacher said just when I crossed the door.
