What is Paget's disease?

Paget's disease is a condition in which there is excessive breakdown and new growth of bone tissue.
Due to the rapid regrowth of bones, they become larger and softer than normal, and can become deformed and break easily.
Paget's disease can interfere with the body's natural recycling process, in which old bone tissue is progressively replaced by new bone tissue.
Paget's disease usually affects the pelvis, skull, spine, and legs.
The risk of developing Paget's disease increases with age and if there are direct relatives who have the disorder.
The main treatment for Paget's disease is bisphosphonates, the medication used to strengthen bones weakened by osteoporosis.
Surgery may be necessary if there are complications.
