What are the components of the circulatory system and what is their function?
The circulatory system is responsible for transporting oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, and waste substances through the blood. The circulatory system is composed of three components: blood, blood vessels (arteries, veins, and capillaries), and the heart. The blood collects oxygen from the lungs and nutrients from the small intestine and transports them to all cells of the body. It also collects carbon dioxide and waste substances and carries them to the respiratory and excretory systems for elimination. The blood is liquid, red in color, and is composed of three types of cells that float in a liquid called blood plasma. The three types of cells in the blood are red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The blood vessels are like tubes through which the blood circulates. There are three types: arteries, veins, and capillaries. The heart is a muscular and hollow organ that functions as a pump to propel blood to all organs of the body. It is divided into two halves, right and left, separated by a wall without communication (interventricular septum).
