The dentist should evaluate the physical and psychological state of the patient to withstand the stress generated during dental treatment. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in developing countries. The use of oral contraceptives, coffee, and alcohol are risk factors for coronary heart disease. The most important risk factors for atherosclerosis and its complications are age, sex, diabetes mellitus, uncontrolled hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, smoking, left ventricular hypertrophy, increased plasma fibrinogen, obesity, and sedentary lifestyle.
