The surfactant is produced in type II pneumocytes and is composed of phospholipids with small amounts of neutral fat, cholesterol, and proteins.
The incidence of EMH is estimated at around 50% of those under 29 weeks of gestation and only 5% in those over 34 weeks.
The administration of surfactant has shown a decrease in the need for ECMO and a decrease in mortality.
The ideal is that they are born in a specialized perinatal center or, failing that, that they are transferred early to a tertiary neonatal center.
