What is enterocolitis necrotizing?
a) A disease caused by hypoxia, prematurity, use of formulas instead of breast milk, and an infectious component that is sometimes present. It produces a process of intestinal hypoxia-ischemia, so the intestine begins to suffer, gas is trapped in its walls, which can end in perforation and necrosis.
b) A disease that affects more frequently newborns with intrauterine growth restriction, due to the state of hypoxia in which they are, releasing meconium and can swallow and aspirate it. It produces a valve system in which they begin to trap air, causing respiratory failure.
c) A pathology that affects the lungs of premature newborns, due to the lack of surfactant production by type II pneumocytes, causing the lung to collapse and not be able to expand. In the X-ray, a white lung is observed, with diffuse condensation in frosted glass.
d) A pathology that affects the retina of premature newborns, is multifactorial but is mainly associated with hyperoxia and prematurity. From 32 weeks of gestational age, retinal vascularization begins, matures from nasal to temporal and advances like a mantle. If there is any injury that alters this process, such as lack of oxygen, this vasculature becomes tortuous, produces communications between vessels and penetrates the vitreous humor and pulls it, causing a detachment of the retina.
