What are the characteristics of a typical vertebra?
The body of a vertebra is a short and wide bone located in its anterior part with the function of supporting weight. The vertebral arch is a bony arch located in the posterior part of the vertebra, attached to the vertebral body, with the function of protecting the spinal cord. The vertebral arch is considered a dynamic part and is formed by two pedicles, attached to the body, and two laminae, which continue to the pedicles backwards, so that, when joined together, they form the arch with a hole in its center, the vertebral foramen. In each vertebral arch, 7 protruding bones originate: one spinous process, two transverse processes, and four articular processes.
