• Answer the following questions as best as possible:
1.- What’s the main difference between anatomy and physiology?
Anatomy is the study of the different body parts and physiology is the study of the
body parts functions.
2.- What’s melanin?
Melanin is a substance present in the skin that produces pigment. Each person will
have a different amount of melanin in their skin. This variation is due to genetics and
other factors.
3.- What’s the epithelial tissue?
Epithelial Tissue Epithelial tissues are widespread throughout the body. They form
the covering of all body surfaces, line body cavities and hollow organs, and are the
major tissue in glands.
4.- What are the epithelial tissue’s main functions?
They perform a variety of functions that include protection, secretion, absorption,
excretion, filtration, diffusion, and sensory reception.
5.- Name 3 examples of connective tissue:
Cartilage, bones, blood.
6.- Which are the two classifications of the skeletal system?
Axial and appendicular skeleton
7.- Type of cancer caused by an abnormal growth of skin cells that give skin
color?
Melanoma
8.- What does the sebaceous gland produce?
Oily substance called sebum.
9.- Name the 2 main layers of the skin (we know there are 3, name the
outermost 2)
 Dermis and epidermis.
10.- What’s the function of the pyloric sphincter?
regulate the amount of chyme released into the duodenum, which allows for maximal
absorption of nutrients. Another major function of the pyloric sphincter is to prevent
the regurgitation of chyme and bile.
11.- What’s LDL and HDL (cholesterol components)?
LDL and HDL are the two main types of cholesterol, that make up your total of
cholesterol. LDL: (low-density lipoproteins) is the bad cholesterol HDL: (high-density
lipoproteins) is the good cholesterol
12.- Place the main organs from the digestive system (in order):
1- mouth
2- esophagus
3- the stomach
4- small intestine
5- pancreas
6- liver
7- gallbladder
8- colon
9- anus
13.- What does fiber do to your body?
Fiber helps in controlling your blood sugar level. As compared to other food types, it
takes a fairly longer time for fibers to get digested in the body. As fibers slow down
the process of digestion, it takes a longer time for sugar or glucose to enter the
bloodstream. This consequently helps in maintaining a proper level of sugar in the
body.
14.- What’s the main cause of death in the whole world?
Hearth diseases
15.- What’s the most probable health issue a drug addict, obese person may
develop at a relatively young age (30-50’s)?
Hearth diseases, cancer, fatty liver.
 16.- What are leucocytes?
Leukocytes, also known as white blood cells, are a central part of the immune
system. They help to protect the body against foreign substances, microbes, and
infectious diseases.
17.- In which body structure are the vocal cords located?
Larynx.
18.- Which are some of the main causes for heart attacks?
The most common cause of a heart attack is coronary artery disease, which is the
most common type of heart disease.
19.- What’s the pericardium?
The pericardium is a thin sac that surrounds your heart. It protects and lubricates
your heart and keeps it in place within your chest.
20.- What’s the endocardium?
The endocardium is a thin, smooth tissue that makes up the lining of the chambers
and valves of the heart. The innermost layer of the heart’s walls, it serves as a barrier
between cardiac muscles and the bloodstream and contains necessary blood
vessels. It also houses the heart’s conduction system, which regulates the activity of
cardiac muscles.
21.- What’s the myocardium?
The myocardium is the middle muscular layer of the heart. It is the thickest layer
which lies between the single-cell endocardium layer, and the outer epicardium,
which makes up the visceral pericardium that surrounds and protects the heart.
22.- What’s the main function of the nose cavities?
Role as a passage for inhaled air and role of mucus membrane in purifying the air.
23.- Are the kidneys complementary organs of the digestive system? Yes/No,
why?
Not directly but yes, because kidneys are part of the urinary system. However, the
two systems do interact. The Digestive System brings energy into the body which
feeds, in part, the kidneys. The kidneys, as part of the Urinary System, support the
cells of the body (including those of the Digestive System) to eliminate wastes from
the blood.
24.- How are the contraction and relaxation of the heart called?
Hearth rate.
25.- What does the nervous system use to convey information to neurons?
Send electrical impulses and chemicals signals.
26.- Which are the main phases of the ovarian cycle?
The ovarian cycle consists of three phases: follicular (preovulatory) phase, ovulation,
and luteal (postovulatory) phase, whereas the uterine cycle is divided into
menstruation, proliferative (postmenstrual) phase and secretory (premenstrual)
phase.
