TEENAGE MOTHERS
Adolescence is the period of human growth and development between the ages
of 10 and 19, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In Ecuador,
my country, at this age, 12% of women already have a child or have
experienced at least one pregnancy. It is the highest rate in South America.
According to experts, the most appropriate age to be a mother is between 20
and 35 years, since the risk to the health of the mother and child is much lower.
The adolescent is neither physically nor mentally prepared to have a baby and
assume the responsibility of motherhood.
Although contraceptive methods are known, in most cases they are not used.
Despite this, the main cause of adolescent pregnancy continues to be sexual
harassment and violence.
In conclusion, the determinants of adolescent pregnancy are linked to poverty,
education, gender inequalities, lack of professional opportunities, and barriers to
accessing sexual and reproductive health services. These factors represent
obstacles to the development of alternative life projects to motherhood.
