Although medical terms have been drawn from
many languages, a large majority are from Greek
and Latin. (Aunque los términos medicos en su
gran mayoría han tenido origen en varios
lenguajes, una gran mayoría se originan del griego
y el latín).
Terms of Greek origin occur mainly in clinical terminology: cardiology,
nephropathia, gastritis, etc. (Palabras derivadas del griego se usan
principalmente en terminología clínica: cardiología, nefropatía, gastritis,
etc.)

There are, however, terms of different origin, taken from French:
massage, passage, plaque, pipette, bougie, or from Italian: varicella,
belladonna, influenza. (Hay sin embargo términos de diferentes

Latin terms make up the majority of anatomical terminology
(Nomina Anatomica): ventriculus. (Los términos latinos
constituyen la mayoría de los términos anatómicos:

Todos los términos médicos pueden ser divididos en
partes. Las tres partes son:
Stem or Root → la raíz
Prefix→ el prefijo
Suffix → el sufijo
Normalmente sólo dos de estas partes están presentes en
un término médico.

• Puedes cambiar el significado de un término
poniendo un prefijo antes de la raíz.
• Los prefijos pueden ser divididos en varias
categorías de significado.

PREFIXES PERTAINING TO LOCATION (SE REFIEREN A 
LUGAR)
El prefijo intra- significa dentro o adentro. 
La raya después de intra- indica que la raíz viene después del 
prefijo.
Combinando el prefijo intra- con la raíz
abdominal, sabes que intra-abdominal
significa dentro del abdomen. 
Endo- es también un prefijo que significa lo 
mismo.

Peri- es un prefijo que significa

inflamación alrededor del corazón.

Ec- y ecto- son prefijos que significan fuera, 
afuera.
Un embarazo ectópico, por ejemplo, es un

Retro- and post- are prefixes which mean behind. (Retro- y post-
significan detrás)
Retrocardial means located behind the heart. (Retrocardial significa
localizado detrás del corazón). Postnasal means situated behind the 
nose. (Postnasal significa detrás de la nariz)

The prefixes sub- and hypo- mean under
(significan bajo, debajo). 
Subcutaneous, for example, means under 
the skin (subcutáneo significa debajo de la 
piel).
Hypodermic needle is one that is inserted
under the skin (aguja hipodérmica significa 
aquella que se inserta bajo la piel).
Inter- is a prefix meaning between (entre).
The stem, costal, means ribs (costillas).
Intercostal muscles are muscles which are between the ribs. 
(Músculos intercostales son músculos que están entre las 
costillas)

By combining the prefix ante- with the stem partum, you know

significa antes del parto o nacimiento).
The prefix post- means after. (El 
prefijo post- significa después)
A postoperative complication is a 
complication which occurred after 
surgery.

The prefixes a- or an- mean without or absence of. (Los 
prefijos a- o an- significan sin o ausencia de)
Afebrile means without/absence of fever. (Afebrile significa
sin/ausencia de fiebre)
The stem esthesia means feeling. 
(La raíz esthesia significa
sensación). 
Therefore, anesthesia means 
without feeling. 
(Por lo tanto anesthesia significa sin 
sensación).
The prefix anti- means against. 
The term antitoxin means against toxin or poison.
(El término antitoxin significa contra toxina o veneno).

A unicycle has one wheel. (Un uniciclo tiene una sola rueda)

Bi- is a prefix indicating the number

The prefix for three is tri-. (tri- significa tres) 
Therefore, the valve in the heart which has three 
parts is called the tricuspid valve. (De esta forma la

Hyper- is a prefix that is just the opposite of hypo-. 
Hyper means above or high. (Hyper- es un prefijo opuesto a

A person with hypertension has blood pressure
above the normal or high blood pressure. (Una persona con

A person with bradycardia has an abnormally

A microcyte, therefore, is a very small cell. (Microcyte entonces, 
es una célula muy pequeña)
A word indicating smallness of heart is 
microcardia.
(Una palabra que indica que un corazón es pequeño es

Macro- is a prefix which means the
opposite of micro. (macro- es un prefijo que 
significa lo opuesto a micro-)
Macro- is used in words to mean large. 
(macro- se utiliza en palabras para significar grande)

A megacolon is an abnormally large colon.

Antero- is a prefix meaning anterior part or in front of.

Therefore, anterolateral means 
situated in front and to one side. 
(Entonces, anterolateral significa situado

Levoversion is a term which means the
act of turning to the left. (Levoversion es un
