What is the fisiopathology of aortic stenosis?
Aortic stenosis is characterized by an incomplete opening of the aortic valve during ventricular systole, which affects the anterograde flow, generating a pressure gradient between the left ventricle and the ascending aorta. The overload of volume generates an eccentric hypertrophy (sarcomeres in series to accommodate the increase in volume). The increase in the expulsive volume increases the systolic blood pressure and therefore the afterload, determining a great left ventricular hypertrophy. The most common cause of aortic stenosis is rheumatic disease.
