What are the advantages and limitations of blood typing tests for dogs and cats?
Blood typing tests for dogs and cats are low-cost and can be performed quickly in the clinic. These tests are based on hemagglutination reactions when surface antigens of erythrocytes come into contact with a known antibody. In dogs, there are cards that determine DEA 1.1 by agglutination, and in cats, blood types A, B, and AB can be determined. The immunochromatography-based system is not valid for patients who autoagglutinate or have severe anemia. The volume of sample required for the immunochromatography test is 10 µl of blood, while for the agglutination test, it is 150 µl of blood.
