What are the causes of secondary dyslipidemia?
Hypothyroidism, hypopituitarism, nephrotic syndrome, anorexia nervosa, among others, can cause hypercholesterolemia. Diabetes mellitus type 1 and 2, obesity, metabolic syndrome, antiretroviral treatment, corticosteroid therapy, oral contraceptives, alcohol intake, obstructive liver disease, survivors of childhood cancer, glucogenosis type 1, among others, can cause hypercholesterolemia with hypertriglyceridemia. Apo-B100, Apo CII, and other mechanisms can cause familial hypertriglyceridemia. Apo E is responsible for dysbetalipoproteinemia, which is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner.
