What are the dietary modifications to be made in a child with dyslipidemia?
Caloric intake should be adequate to promote growth and development. Carbohydrates should account for 50-60% of total calories, proteins for 10-20%, and fats for 30-35%. Saturated fatty acid content should be < 9% of total calories. Dietary cholesterol content should be < 300 mg/day. Maximum consumption of trans fats should be < 1% of total calories. Dietary fiber should be 8-20 g (depending on age). Sterols/plant stanols should be 1.5-2 g/day from the age of five. Micronutrients, especially fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin D) and minerals (iron, zinc, and calcium), should be monitored. In case of an elevation of C-LDL, esterols/plant stanols, fiber, and moderate-to-intense physical exercise for 1 hour/day should be recommended. In case of an elevation of TG, sugar consumption should be reduced, fish consumption should be increased, and moderate-to-intense physical exercise for 1 hour/day should be recommended.
