What are the main CHARACTERISTICS of the Generation of 27?

1) They are familiar with literature and admire the classics. Some of them are Literature professors: Dámaso Alonso, Jorge Guillén, Pedro Salinas, Gerardo Diego, Luis Cernuda.
2) They represent a synthesis between tradition (both cultured and popular literature) and renewal or avant-garde. They take from artistic avant-gardes what is new, original, provocative, the play of wit, and humorous rupture.
3) Balance between the intellectual and the sentimental, the cultured and the popular.
4) Central role of metaphor and image: highly elaborate language that leads some poets towards surrealism: Lorca, Alberti, Aleixandre.
5) Ideology: pessimistic view of life; they are against the repression exerted by an alienating society because it is built by reason, which is dogmatic and anti-vital. They defend life, the instinctive, spontaneous, and natural. The influence of Freud and the notion of the unconscious becomes evident.
