What is the concept of esplenomegalia?
Esplenomegalia is defined in clinical practice as an increase in the normal size of the spleen below the left costal margin. The suspicion is confirmed through imaging methods and is defined as such when its longitudinal diameter is greater than 13 cm. Esplenomegalia and hypersplenism should not be confused, with the latter referring to an increase in spleen function, with splenomegaly, peripheral cytopenias of any of the peripheral blood series, and compensatory medullary hyperplasia.
