What is the diagnosis of edema?
The edema is caused by an increase in the net filtration of fluid from the vascular bed. Other factors include compensatory renal retention of sodium and water, venous and lymphatic flow efficiency, and regulation of capillary flow through precapillary sphincters. Edema is more common in the lower extremities, but can also occur in the upper extremities, trunk, and genitals. The edema is described as local, regional, or generalized.
