What should be asked during the anamnesis of a patient with edema?
If the edema is localized, it is important to ask about the duration and progression of symptoms, presence of pain, previous injury or insect bites, previous surgery, and risk factors for deep vein thrombosis. If the edema affects both lower extremities or is generalized, then it should be questioned about congestive heart failure, diet, toxic exposures, chronic liver disease, renal failure, and endocrinopathies. If the edema is acute, it should be asked about symptoms or history of anaphylaxis, exposure to new drugs or chemicals (such as NSAIDs, steroids), and recent surgery. All of the above.
