What are asteroids?

Asteroids are minor bodies of the Solar System, mostly composed of silicates and metals.
The majority of asteroids are small, from a few meters to tens of kilometers, and have very irregular shapes.
Ceres is the first asteroid discovered, in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi.
Almost all asteroids are located in the region between Mars and Jupiter known as the main belt.
