How to approach the diagnosis and treatment of piodermas in dogs?
Recognize the different clinical presentations of the process.
Establish a logical protocol of differential diagnoses and a plan to try to discover the underlying disease that predisposes our patient to suffer from pioderma.
Establish a logical therapeutic plan that allows us to control the pioderma and the underlying process.
The treatment with antibiotics should be continued until one week after the clinical symptoms disappear in the case of superficial piodermas.
Corticosteroids should be avoided as they mask the ability for the clinician to make a judgment on the resolution of the problem.
The use of antibiotics at low doses and continuously or antibiotics in the form of pulsatile therapy is the last alternative for the treatment of chronic recurrent piodermas.
