What I understood in this conference is that the Laplace transform is a powerful mathematical tool formulated to solve a wide variety of initial-value problems. The strategy involves transforming challenging differential equations into simpler algebraic problems where solutions can be easily obtained. Laplace transform is a mathematical technique that is part of certain integral transforms, such as the Fourier transform, Hilbert transform, and Mellin transform, among others. These transforms are defined through improper integrals and convert a function in one input variable into another function in another variable. The Laplace transform can be used to solve linear differential equations and integral equations. While it can be applied to problems with variable coefficients, it is generally more suitable for problems with constant coefficients. An additional requirement is knowledge of the initial conditions for the differential equation. Its major advantage becomes apparent when the function in the independent variable appearing in the differential equation is a piecewise function. Solving differential equations using the Laplace transform technique transforms a differential equation into an algebraic problem. The methodology involves applying the transform to the differential equation and then using the properties of the transform. The challenge now is to find a function in the independent variable with a certain expression as its transform. The Laplace transform is a linear operator that is highly useful for solving numerous mathematical problems, particularly ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations. Focusing on its application, the Laplace transform converts the differential equation into an algebraic equation, typically easy to solve. This allows us to find the solution to the ordinary differential equation (ODE) by applying the inverse of the Laplace transform to the solution of the obtained algebraic equation. One advantage of using this operator is that it simplifies calculations for solving ODEs whose domains must be divided into subintervals. Key characteristics: • It is an operational method that can be used to solve linear differential equations. • Sinusoidal, damped sinusoidal, and exponential functions can be transformed into linear algebraic functions in the variable S. • It serves to replace operations such as differentiation and integration with algebraic operations in the complex plane of the variable S. • Allows the use of graphical techniques to predict the behavior of a system without the need to solve the corresponding system of differential equations. Laplace transforms find applications in engineering, including control systems, electronics, and mechanics. In electronic circuit analysis, for instance, applying Laplace transforms to an RLC circuit involves solving a differential equation describing the voltage behavior.Laplace transforms prove to be a powerful tool for circuit resolution. The differential equation, originally in the time domain, is transformed into the frequency domain through the Laplace transform, followed by algebraic operations, and applying the Inverse Laplace Transform yields the response in the time domain. In process control, Laplace transforms are employed due to the necessity of considering dynamic models in process studies, i.e., models exhibiting variable behavior over time. This leads to the use of time-dependent differential equations to mathematically represent process behavior. Indeed, Laplace transforms enable the solution of linear differential equations by transforming them into algebraic equations, facilitating their study. Once the behavior of dynamic systems has been studied, designing and analyzing control systems becomes simple. To design an automatic control system, understanding the process under control is essential, i.e., knowing the differential equation describing its behavior using physical, chemical, and/or electrical laws. This differential equation is referred to as the process model. Once the model is obtained, the controller can be designed and implemented and much more. It’s what I interpreted from the teacher explaining.
