What is the commercial importance of alkenes?
Due to the fact that the carbon-carbon double bond easily converts to other functional groups, alkenes are important intermediates for the synthesis of polymers (shoes, plastic bags, bumpers, water tanks, wraps, bottles, etc.), pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and other important chemicals. Ethylene is the organic compound that is most produced in the world, with most of it being polymerized to obtain polyethylene (PET); the rest is used as a raw material in the production of ethanol, acetic acid, ethylene glycol, and vinyl chloride. Ethylene also serves as a hormone for plants, accelerating the ripening process of fruits.
