Clinical signs include necrosis of the liver, ulceration of the cecal mucosa, and blackhead disease. The disease is caused by Histomonas meleagridis and is transmitted by the nematode Heterakis gallinae and earthworms. Lesions include necrosis of the liver and ulceration of the cecal mucosa.
