A fork-like DNA structure. Replisome. Eukaryotic DNA replication restricts DNA replication to only once per cell cycle. EUKARIOTIC DNA REPLICATION A simplified schematic of DNA replication. All RNA primers will be removed leaving gaps in the newly-synthesized DNA strands. DNA Polymerase and Ligase will replace all the RNA primers with DNA except the RNA primer at the 5' ends of each newly-synthesized (blue) strand. This means that each newly- synthesized DNA strand is shorter at its 5' end than the equivalent strand in the parental DNA. In Mitosis individual chromosomes align at the equatorial plate in Metaphase. A bilateral gynandromorph of Drosophila melanogaster formed following the loss of one X chromosome in one of the two cells during the first mitotic division. The larger the chromosome, the worse the consequences. In panel (a) and (b), the chromosome from the parent contributing a normal gamete (without a non- disjunctional event) in each case is shown in blue. Only one chromosome pair is shown for simplicity. Turner syndrome is a condition in which a female is partly or completely missing an X chromosome. Signs and symptoms vary. Often, a short and webbed neck, low-set ears, low hairline at the back of the neck, short stature, and swollen hands and feet are seen at birth. Typically they are without menstrual periods, do not develop breasts, and are unable to have children. Heart defects, diabetes, and low thyroid hormone occur more frequently. Most people with TS have normal intelligence. Many, however, have troubles with spatial visualization such as that needed for mathematics. Vision and hearing problems occur more often. Infertile. source: Wikipedia No cure for Turner syndrome is known. Treatment, however, may help with symptoms. Human growth hormone injections during childhood may increase adult height. Estrogen replacement therapy can promote development of the breasts and hips and shedding of the uterus lining. Medical care is often required to manage other health problems with which TS is associated. Turner syndrome occurs in between one in 2000 and one in 5000 females at birth. All regions of the world and cultures are affected about equally. People with TS have a shorter life expectancy, mostly due to heart problems and diabetes. source: Wikipedia Klinefelter syndrome is also known as XXY. The primary feature is sterility. Often symptoms may be subtle and many people do not realize they are affected. Sometimes symptoms are more prominent and may include weaker muscles, greater height, poor coordination, less body hair, smaller genitals, breast growth, and less interest in sex. Often it is only at puberty that these symptoms are noticed. Intelligence is usually normal; however, reading difficulties and problems with speech are more common. Symptoms are typically more severe if three or more X chromosomes are present. source: Wikipedia Klinefelter syndrome can be caused in two ways source: Wikipedia ☺ ☹☹ ☺ XY XYXX XX Meiosis Meiosis Meiosis Meiosis Sex determination and differentiation The gene SRY located on the Y chromosome determines differentiation as a male during embryogenesis. The SRY gene is located in the Y chromosome close to the pseudoautosomal region that pairs with the X chromosome. If recombination occurs and the SRY gene gets transferred to the X chromosome this will result in a male XX. Similarly, transgenic XX mice carrying the SRY gene in the X chromosome also develop as males. If the SRY gene gets mutated or deleted from the Y chromosome this will result in a female XY. Sex reversal also occurs when the gene SOX9 on chromosome 17 gets mutated. Absence of testosterone or its receptor also cause a female phenotype in XY.
