-          Barbara: Edward, I’m going to need you to be completely honest – the
event that took place this morning is unacceptable within the company
and could be considered a criminal act. I could call the police and
press charges, and you would be arrested in a short time. I demand an
explanation, or I will have to call the authorities immediately.
-                  Edward: ¡Espere, por favor! Todo es un malentendido, ¡puedo

-          Edward: Wait, please! It’s all a misunderstanding, I can explain!
-                  Bárbara: No me parece un malentendido, la verdad. Viniste a tu

debido a tu estado de embriaguez, derribaste numerosas estanterías
llenas de mercancía de alto costo, causando destrozos valorados en

several tens of thousands of dollars. You wrecked at least a quarter of
the electrical appliances we had in the warehouse, destroyed many
pieces of equipment that were ready to be delivered to our clients, and
we have to deal with this problem now, with the Christmas period
approaching quickly.

view! Were the goods insured?

everything’s going so badly for me. My wife left me two months ago,
taking my children with her, and every time I seem to have more debts
and problems. Yes, I drank too much, but it was due to the fact that
lately I’m more depressed and without having an idea of how to get
out of this difficult situation. I haven’t wanted to miss work, but it’s
difficult to continue coming here despite what is going on at home.
-          Bárbara: Mmm… no sabía que esto estaba sucediendo en casa. Pero

bout of acute alcoholism. This doesn’t sound good at all. For a
moment, I can even feel that what happened at the warehouse isn’t so
serious.
-                  Edward: No, señora Bárbara, debo pagar las consecuencias de
alguna forma. Solo no llame a la policía, por favor. Eso sería lo peor
que podría ocurrirme en estos momentos. Terminaría de arruinar mi
vida. No quiero que mis hijos sepan que estuve en la cárcel;

-                  Edward: No, Mrs. Barbara. I must pay the consequences somehow.
Just don’t call the police, please. That would be the worst thing that
could happen to me at this moment. It would finish ruining my life. I
don’t want my kids to knowthat I was in prison; I would lose them for
good.
-                  Bárbara: No voy a llamar a la policía, ¿de acuerdo? Pero necesito

-                  Barbara: I’m not calling the police, okay? But I need you to
compensate the company for this terrible event. What do you suggest?

es, necesitaba comunicarte algo.
-                  Harry: Yes, June. Thanks for coming and don’t worry. Take a seat.
That’s true, I needed to inform you of something.
-          June: A ver, ¿qué será? ¿Es algo serio? Siento el ambiente algo tenso,
la verdad.
-                  June: Let’s see, what might it be? Is it something serious? I feel the
tension in the atmosphere, to be honest.
-                  Harry: Bueno, June, es importante que hablemos un poco de la
empresa y una reestructuración que se está llevando a cabo en este
momento. La directiva de la compañía ha comenzado a cambiar la
manera en que hacemos las cosas en esta sede, y los departamentos

and the restructuring that is being carried out at this moment in time.
The company’s board has begun to change the way in which we do

entirely.
-                  June: Entiendo… Bueno, ahora me siento un poco preocupada. ¿De
qué vamos a hablar acá?
-          June: I understand… Okay, and now I feel a bit worried. What are we
going to talk about here?
-                  Harry: El día de ayer recibí un correo electrónico de parte de mis
superiores, en el cual ilustraban, de manera detallada y específica, los
cambios a realizarse en esta sede, incluyendo una lista de los cargos
que serían eliminados, además de las personas de las que vamos a
prescindir.
-                  Harry: Yesterday, I received an email from my superiors, in which
they illustrated, specifically and in detail, the changes to be made at
this branch, including a list of the positions that would be eliminated,
as well as the people we are going to lay off.
-          June: Oh, ya sé de qué trata esta conversación.
-          June: Oh, I know what this conversation is about now.
-          Harry: Sí, June. Lamentándolo mucho, debo informarte que no vamos
a requerir tus servicios a partir del final de este mes, ya que tu cargo
ha sido fusionado con el de supervisor de atención al cliente, el cual
será llenado por un especialista de la capital. El aviso te llega el día
de hoy para que tengas tiempo de arreglartus asuntos y buscar un
nuevo empleo en el mercado. Como agradecimiento, incluiremos un
bono en tu indemnización por despido.
-          Harry: Yes, June. With great regret, I must inform you that we are no
longer going to require your services starting from the end of this
month, since your position has been merged with that of the customer
service supervisor, which will be filled by a specialist from the capital.
The notice arrives today for you to have time to arrange your affairs
and find a new job in the market. As appreciation, we will include a
bonus in your severance pay.
-                  June: Eso no es lo que quisiera, ―me encantaría mantener mi
trabajo, sin importar si es en algún departamento nuevo con otro
cargo―. He dedicado siete años de mi vida a esta empresa y creo que
nunca he fallado en mis responsabilidades. Me gustaría que

-                  June: That’s not really what I want – I would love to keep my job,
without caring if it’s in a new department with another position. I’ve
dedicated seven years of my life to this company, and I believe I’ve
never failed in my responsibilities. I would like for this decision to be
reconsidered, because I have been a faithful and efficient worker.
-          Harry: Mil disculpas, June, pero la decisión es final. Me duele mucho

you is provide you a recommendation for your future jobs.
